Israeli Troops Shoot Palestinian Attempting to Ram West Bank Checkpoint (VIDEO)
by Dave Bender
Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint near the West Bank city of Kalkilya shot a Palestinian driver who, according to initial reports, did not stop as required for inspection, and may have tried to run down soldiers, Israel’s Channel 2 News said.
No troops were hurt in the incident, the army said.
The man, who was apparently smuggling eight illegal workers into Israel, tried to burst through the Eyal checkpoint, Army radio said.
After calling on the driver to halt, soldiers on duty fired in the air, and then at the vehicle, according to the report.
The driver sustained mortal wounds, and Israeli medics tried to stabilize his condition en-route to hospital. His status is unclear.
After the vehicle came to a halt, one of the passengers tried to flee and was shot, sustaining minor wounds, according to Israel Radio. Palestinian media said he was shot in the foot.
In recent months, Palestinians have tried to attack soldiers and smuggle car bombs through several check points in Judea and Samaria.
Earlier Tuesday, two men from the Arab Israeli community of Tayibe were arrested after massive police forces searched the area surrounding Kfar Yona in central Israel, in the wake of a terror alert. The police say there is no longer any threat.
