Scant hours before US President Barack Obama is scheduled to present an operational strategy against the Islamic State (ISIS), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a special discussion on Wednesday about the new threat. Objective: to examine the treatment of the organization’s terror cells in Israel, Channel 2 News reported.

Minister of Public Security Yitzhak Aharonovitch, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein and representatives of the Shin Bet and other security officials attended the session.

The group examined legal tools available to fight the brutal terrorist organization, as well as investigate enforcement measures against the possibility of the establishment of a cell of the organization in Israel.

Last week, Defense Minister Moshe (Bogie) Ya’alon declared ISIS and the Abdullah Azzam Brigades (affiliated with al-Qaeda) as “illegal organizations.”

“The significant measure allows [Israel] to take legal action against organizations and others, fundraising and other activities of these organizations or their members,” the ministry said in its announcement.

“The signing was done in accordance with the recommendation of the General Security Service (Shin Bet),” the statement read.

“This is being done for the sake of national security, public safety and public order,” according to the declaration, made one day after the terror organization beheaded American-Israeli reporter, Steven Sotloff.
