New York Times – The 2014 congressional contests are on track to be the most expensive midterm elections in history, according to a new report from the Center for Responsive Politics, which projects that nearly $4 billion will be spent by candidates, parties and outside groups by Election Day.
Candidates and parties are projected to spend about $2.7 billion, while outside spenders — chiefly “super PACs” and political nonprofit organizations — will spend about $900 million. In 2012, in the midst of President Obama’s re-election campaign, total outside spending reached $1.3 billion.
