The ‘Chickenshitgate’ Fallout for America, Israel, and the Middle East

President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu at the White House. Photo: Screenshot. – Naftali Bennett, Israel’s economy minister, got it 100 percent right in a Facebook posting just a few hours after the latest blow to American-Israeli relations—aka “chickenshitgate“—surfaced in the media.

Responding to the anonymous “senior Obama administration” official who told The Atlantic correspondent Jeffrey Goldberg that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was a “chickenshit,” Bennett said, “Cursing the prime minister and calling him names is an insult not just to him but to the millions of Israeli citizens and Jews across the globe. The leader of Syria who slaughtered 150,000 people was not awarded the name ‘chickenshit.’ Neither was the leader of Saudi Arabia who stones women and homosexuals or the leader of Iran who murders freedom protestors.”

I would have also added Qatar into the mix, as that terror-financing, slave-owning Gulf emirate is also fawned over by the Obama administration, but Bennett’s point stands nonetheless. Our officials in Washington come across as a vindictive and petty bunch, accusing an ally of cowardice while hiding behind anonymity, and guilty of hypocrisy in its rankest form.

“Chickenshit?” That’s rich, coming from an administration whose fear of Vladimir Putin is the subject of derisory mirth in the Kremlin, and whose cravenness towards Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Damascus has directly resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent Syrians. Blissfully dismissive of their own failings, they round on Netanyahu, a man who served with distinction in his country’s elite Sayeret Matkal army unit, by calling him, of all things, a coward!

And that’s not the only epithet. As Goldberg pointed out, “Over the years, Obama administration officials have described Netanyahu to me as recalcitrant, myopic, reactionary, obtuse, blustering, pompous, and ‘Aspergery.'” (For those unclear as to what that last term means, it’s a pejorative description for people with Asperger syndrome, a form of autism, and it’s as nasty as calling someone a “retard.” Remember that next time you hear another kumbaya, “let’s heal” speech from Obama.) You have to think that sooner or later, the administration will join the chorus of confirmed Israel-haters by labeling Netanyahu as a “baby killer” and a “war criminal.”

Sure, the Obama officials will say that the Israelis started it, by citing the injudicious comments about Secretary of State John Kerry uttered in private by Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon. But Ya’alon was man enough to apologize for what he said, and that still didn’t stop the administration from pursuing a private vendetta against him, blocking him from meeting with key officials like Vice President Joe Biden during his recent visit to Washington. And while the Israelis wish they could turn back the clock on Ya’alon’s advice to Kerry to “take his Nobel Prize and leave us alone,” Obama’s appointees see nothing wrong with insulting Netanyahu in such a grotesque manner because, you see, they are Right with a rolling, upper case “R,” and therefore anything goes.

I’ve argued many times in this column that, as far as Israel is concerned, the Obama administration is a lost cause. The only question now is how much damage they will do before Obama departs the White House—a day that can’t come soon enough, frankly.

The immediate danger lies on two fronts. Firstly, the Palestinians. Any doubts that the Obama administration believes that Israel is responsible for the stalemate with the Palestinians will have been dispelled by Goldberg’s revelations. As far as Obama, Kerry, and company are concerned, the primary problem is Israel’s insistence in building new housing units in its undivided capital, Jerusalem. Their impatience could reach the point where the U.S. no longer backs Israel at the United Nations, thereby allowing Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s crusade for unilateral recognition to reach fruition. In the event of such an outcome, Israel could find itself worryingly isolated, as the European governments are anxiously awaiting a signal from the Americans that it’s okay to abandon the Jewish state. If so, we will then be confronted with the edifying spectacle of the world’s democracies aligning themselves with tyrannies from Venezuela to Iran in singling out Israel for opprobrium.

Secondly, the Iranians. The deadline for a final deal over the mullah’s nuclear ambitions—November 24—is upon us. Perhaps Obama thinks that cursing Netanyahu will persuade Iran’s Supreme Leader, the brutal Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to accept a deal. Judging by the breathlessly excited manner with which the regime’s English-language outlet, the Holocaust-denying Press TV, greeted chickenshitgate, the president might be onto something.

But what benefits will a historic accord with the Iranians bring us? Very few, whereas the costs will be enormous.

For a start, this isn’t just about Israel. We will alienate the conservative Arab states like Egypt and Saudi Arabia, all of them already angry and frustrated with Obama’s kowtowing to Tehran. We will permit an Islamist state to become a nuclear power, at the same time that it backs terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah with money and weapons. We will lose our leverage over the Iranians, in the form of biting sanctions, with few resource at our disposal to compel them to cooperate with international nuclear inspectors when they start—as they inevitably will—obstructing them at every turn. And we risk, again, the prospect of an Israeli pre-emptive strike, because whatever else Netanyahu might be, he’s no chickenshit.

Umpteen immediate questions remain, among them: Will Obama apologize for the chickenshit remark? Will he publicly name and discipline the officials who showered Netanyahu with insults? What will he do if the Iranians decline to make a deal?

But the biggest question of all is a long-term one. What will the strategic map of the Middle East look like once Obama is done? That’s what should be occupying the minds of Israel’s leaders, who are painfully aware that Obama’s peace efforts can only lead to more conflict and strife.

This article seems to be framed in the most futile. indeed dangerous, of Zionist fantasies – the delusion that might is not only right, but in Israel’s case can succeed. In this fantasy an ultra Conservative dominated Prime Minister, with the aid of Israel’s D-vine ordered destiny, can lead his nation to the position of regional supremacy, required to bring the extremist Zionist fantasy to fruition – the recreation of the Davidic Kingdom as a modern and greater Israel, with the Temple restored, in resurrected form, to the Temple Mount.

In this the sole possession of a unique Nuclear Arsenal is seen to be the key, and so everything must be poured into ensuring that it remain so. But is any of this fantasy realistic? That is the question that needs to be asked. For this belief system is also the cause of dispute with the infinitely better informed American Administration – a Government that has always held the fate of Israel in its hands, being itself the real source of Israel’s military strength and funding. The Zionist fantasy demands offense, where any American Administration’s offer extends no further than defense. That is the real dispute. The Zionist belief has led its adherents to the delusion that a Republican Administration would be more inclined to offensive foreign policy. There is no evidence that in practice this would eventuate. Indeed one might point out that the Administrations that led America into both the Second World War, and the Vietnam War, were Democrat, as was Woodrow Wilson’s Administration that led America into the Great War in 1917

There is already an Islamic nuclear arsenal, Pakistan. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists estimates the present warhead stockpile at over 100 with an expanding production capacity, and an improving enrichment and delivery technology. Pakistan has totally independent uranium resources, uranium being, as few people actually realise, as common as tin. It is not rare at all; the reason for atomic weapon scarcity is the economic and industrial cost of enrichment, not the rarity of the raw material. Iran, for example has its own deposits. One may argue against their possessing nuclear weapons, but their civil nuclear power program is only sensible. The oil will indeed one day run out, and Iran will be dependent on solar, wind, wave, and nuclear power – unless someone wants to come up with an alternative baseload power source.

What the present American Administration has grasped, is that the Zionist fantasy is neither attainable nor internally realistic. The expansionist aim can only result in a cripplingly expensive violent Occupation and blockade, that will be opposed by ongoing, and increasingly better armed, Guerilla tactics – it is the path of ongoing and unending episodic violence, and civilian misery. The West Bank and Gaza will never be pacified. If de facto annexation were turned into actual annexation, through the process of Arab expulsion, the opposition of Islamic states would almost certainly result in a regional nuclear confrontation – or even an actual war – a war that might last little more than a few minutes. I leave the reader to imagine the nightmare of such a new Holocaust. There will be no warning – no time to rush for deep nuclear shelters. For the loser everything will be lost. For the winner nothing will be left. It will be endtime for the region, as the rest of the world chugs on, much as usual.

That is the external reality – a reality of continuing dangerous confrontation and social repression that borders on Apartheid, and that Zionist extremism seems to expect the American Administration to fund, and be a part of, to the extent that America itself becomes an Islamic target, and its own forces possibly a nuclear target. Obama is far from being a coward, a pro-Islamic, or an enemy to Israel’s people. Obama is rather a well informed and reasoning President. who sees the realities of the situation as they are – and that is exactly how the next President will see them. For the Presidency shapes the man – not the man the Presidency. What the recent election has achieved is likely little more than to set back universal Health Care. Think of that as you watch inadequately treated loved ones die.

The policy of regional bullying, for that seems to be the only one on offer to counter Islamist terrorism, can only result in the question of “identity” being raised. A permanent state of internecine strife raises the question of who we all are. Who is actually fighting who? The Zionist fantasy again is severely defective for it defines the Jewish identity along “racial” lines, in a scientific atmosphere that increasingly derides the very concept of “race” and special discreet Genealogy. It already has the DNA to prove it. There will be no Jewish gene – real or invented – because it never existed. Jews are just as much – and no more – a mixture of peoples as anyone else. We all share a similar ancestry. The connecting thread is one of belief in an ancient religion, that in its modern form preserves the concept of a continuing chain of marriage within, and only within, the primary religious culture. It isn’t so. Jewish numbers have been vastly swollen by ancient conversion and marriage with partners selected from the surrounding cultures. Whether or not there was an exile – modern Jews are not solely descended from those exiles. There is no seed of Abraham except that shared by all of us

The horrors of Antisemitism reinforced the Zionist fantasy – but it cannot survive the rationality extant in times of peace. It was always a defense against attack, rather than a genuine representation of historical or Genealogical reality. That may offend many – but those who reason – who “do the maths” – will likely recognise that the Rabbis who opposed Zionism over a century ago were right. Judaism cannot properly survive the conversion from spirituality to history – for the supposed “history” is wrong.

That the community recognises this, is displayed by the numbers bailing out and joining the secular world. The family I am married into is one such family. Many of them bailed out about 150 years ago, and we have the birth and death records to prove it. There is neither Gentile nor Jew in my family, and neither more is there in anyone else’s. There are merely some people who believe in Judaism, including its Zionist myth of origins, some who adhere to other religions, and increasingly – in later generations – many who are now secular.

Those nineteenth and early twentieth century rabbis who opposed Zionism were right. Zionism like so many ideologies has a built in self destruction. Without the actual founding of the State of Israel that doomsday weapon might never have been triggered. Zionism clutches at straws to maintain the elitist fantasy – but it cannot survive forever. Increasing numbers of people recognise that the Bible is entirely theological and almost never in any sense historical. As the foundation of a society and a body politic it is but shifting sand

That is really the process that now confronts the Jewish and Israeli community, and the only viable response is to unwind the Zionist religious and historical fantasy, and seek origins in genuine history. Israel as a monocultural state backed by vast numbers overseas claiming similar origin and Genealogy, and therefore paying it loyalty, is a fantasy that cannot be long sustained

Netanyahu has made that fantasy his political core – Jerusalem as the capital of a Jewish continent of which Israel is just a peninsular – It is the wrong fantasy, all fantasies eventually disintegrate. The Christian one is in similar disarray, and Islam is split by internal breakdown as it seeks to confront a modern world. The religious centres cannot long hold without radical Reformation for in truth they belong to our periods of underdevelopment and feudalism.

Israel’s hope lies only in it becoming a free and independent state, based in territory limited to the original boundaries of Partition, which intentionally granted a Jewish majority. Within those boundaries it can exist so long as it becomes a multicultural and democratic egalitarian state. I am confident that it could do it

There is no other choice – except chaos. Some might point to the apparent Prophecy in W.B.Yeats famous poem “The Second Coming” and fear the “Rough Beast its hour come round at last” of his vision. But I would rather point to the solution another of his poems points to – one that those who label themselves Jews might well take on board. Peace

“I made my song a coat
    Covered with embroideries
    Out of old mythologies
    From heel to throat;
    But he fools caught it,
Wore it in the world’s eyes
    As though they’d wrought it.
    Song, let them take it,
    For there’s more enterprise
    In walking naked.”

you’re either ignorantly misinformed, a crafty antiSemite clothed in the mantle of
Righteous moral indignation, or batty as a fruitcake.
Methinks you be all of the above.

You know how we are always told: “don’t listen to what he say’s, watch what he does”? Obama is a good muslim, he is a really good liar, he is supporting the enemies of the US and Israel against his oath of office, he is giving aid and comfort to declared enemies of the United States….I have seen what he does, and he deserves to be tried along side of the Gitmo detainees for Treason. Plain and simple! Now that i have gotten that off of my chest; thank you Bibi for seeing the people of the United States are always on your side. With our hearts full of love for the brothers and sisters of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, a member of the household of Joseph greets you.

  • WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME. · almost at 7500 HITS PLEASE SHARE . This is the only way I can speak out. I have a small not rich synagogue and you are my voice. Thank you Christians for Israel for you continued help. I am a product of the holocaust, a son of survivors who lost most of their family. Tomorrow is election day. If Israel is destroyed by a nuclear Iran we will have another holocaust.

    HILLARY = OBAM 3, and 4

. Where is our President Obama as our foreign policy has turned into a complete disaster.

    Video is on

Another holocaust is possible. If it happened once it can happen again. Thank G-d we have Israel. We need to do everything possible to keep Israel militarily strong. Jews get out of Europe. There can be no compromise regarding Israel nor can we depend on the good will of others. This unfortunately is a lesson that many Jews have never learned. Never forget, never forgive never again. • Robert Weintraub

Why does anybody take Obama seriously? With one exception Democratic Senatorial candidates disassociated themselves from him. Obama’s experience with US Jews throughout his political career is as the recipient of unalloyed admiration bordering on worship. The Jewish vote for Obama was far higher than any other white ethnicity. He is, therefore, shocked and outraged that the Jews of Israel do not adore him as do their brethren in the US. There is no Israel/US crises. It is an Israel/Obama crises and Obama is losing power and influence every day.

  • Homer Jones

Obama’s hands could be tied by Congress. And refusing to veto at the UNSC would probably result in severe repercussions in just about every way. It will be interesting to watch. And Americans hate the Iranian government.

  • B C Pfohl

My admiration for the courage that Mr. Netanyahu displays leading the nation of Israel grows on a daily basis. I am embarrassed that those in this State Department as well as this current administration should speak so vulgarly about a man who has more integrity in his little finger than they have exhibited in their whole lives.

I continue to pray for him and the people he has sworn to protect.

  • RiverKing

    Happy with the Obama administration?

A vote for any Democrat at any level is a vote for more of the same.

It you voted for 0 in 2012, I don’t want to hear your moaning now. You either chose to ignore reality or didn’t care.

    • Phil

      You are absolutely right.

  • Jon R.

Good to see the expression of anger that the vicious, destructive behavior of the Israeli state and its psychotic leadership so completely justify.

    • Yale

It is the US that has a leadership with psychological problems. It has been known for decades that children, especially boys, who are abandoned by a parent spend the rest of their lives trying to “get even”. This describes the Obama exactly, except he was abandoned by both parents. Israel is the only participant in this situation led by adults, so Obama has seen its government as the parent on which he seeks to avenge himself.

      • Jon R.

Your attempt at psychologizing Obama is laughable.

The Israeli state has been an psychotically eliminationist project from its inception (and well before). Zionist/Israeli leaders have used mass immigration and military operations to effect a relentless change on the demographics of Palestine/Israel from the 92% Arab majority at the end of the WW I. It has required the consistent application of Chosenist psychosis to bring this about, and Israel won’t be satisfied until the West Bank and Gaza can be depopulated and then annexed. The foundation of this psychosis is the implicit notion that the Palestinian untermenschen must make way for the Jewish Herrenvolk.

And you come up with some half-baked speculation about Obama’s childhood? Only a pro-Israel zealot could try to present that as an actual argument.

The fact that Obama is forced to deal with the disgusting Bibi instead of simply giving him the beat-down that that vicious eliminationist deserves shows what is deeply wrong with the US-Israel relationship–namely the power of the criminally disloyal Israel Lobby.

  • Delilah

Now we all well know who the real chicken shit is don’t we??

  • MOLL

IMO Bibi is an honest, transparent, authentic man with moral integrity. His long, stellar history in politics indicates he is adept at ‘dancing through the tulips’, Tiny Tim-style. And he seems to walk on the proverb “Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline” [Proverbs 1:7. 9:10].

Netanyahu’s wisdom beats all of the WH admin. body collectively, including POTUS. Next time any left-of-center, democrats or WH admin. persons want to visit Israel, deny them entry.

Above all, demand the senior US admin. official ‘chicken little’ who recognizes ‘chickenshit’ to go for an evaluation to determine how much of this ‘chickenshit’ is projected by him, onto others!! The one who recognizes it for what it is, must be carrying a lot of it.

  • Efram

If only this country had a real congress, and not the ideological mental midgets of which it currently consists. Congress could stop Obama’s genuflecting to terrorists at the expense of the US (and Israel). The real chickenshits are those in the US congress. One party hates Obama so much they stonewall everything, good and bad, about his administration, and the other worships him.

As for Iran, Obama decided before he was even elected that he would do all he could to enable Iran to become a nuclear terrorist state. He has incrementally moved in that direction for nearly six years. Don’t worry about there not being an agreement, worry about the agreement. Because, in essence, Obama will sign an agreement leaving Iran alone to do as it pleases.

  • It is not really that unusual that throughout history we realize that those who have professed themselves to be wise have all too often shown they are the most spineless as they maneuver behind the insulative layers of others while spewing insults. Netanyahu might have been been, during a someone’s petty moment, labeled a “coward” but,in reality, has shown himself as well able to stand up to adversity, let alone junior high school insults. Mr. Netanyahu, at the very least, conducts himself in a manner that indicates a completely intact and functioning backbone without the need for any artificial bracing.

    • Elmo Glick

I’m suspicious of anybody who proclaims themselves “wise,” like the “Wise Latina” idiot Sotomayor who could not stop calling the existence of at least the New City of Jerusalem as part of Israel from 1948. She called a simple, unchallenged fact, a “lie.”

Sorry for changing the subject, but I’m more than a little fed up with Washington elites, mostly leftist Ivy League types, who think they know better than the rest of us.

Sort of like the 2/3 of the country who did not vote but who Obama thinks have spoken to him and to whom he will listen as he continues to usurp the role of Congress. No doubt Obama regards the non-voters as having expressed their superior wisdom to those who did and voted against the Democrats.

  • Carol

Now the real CHICKENSHIT is the political hack who labeled Netanyahu “chickenshit” and chooses to remain anonymous!

  • rachel robinson

Obama I am sure is not condemning the person who is calling Bibi names. When the contrast between these two leaders is so obvious that the whole world can see that he is nothing but an empty suit who was given a position that he neither earned or was qualified for the only way he can show his “power” is by calling Bibi names. It does not work. The more he struggles with his non accomplishments the more he will resort to putting down others. It is not only childish but it does not work. He is going down as the worst person and the worst president this beautiful country ever had, and it cannot be corrected. Ever!!!

  • Al Talena

The “anonymous” spokesman was only following Hussain Obama’s lead.

  • howiej

Why name and discipline the official? He/she was just giving voice to Obama’s thoughts with the added deniability present for the president. “I didn’t say it.” Remember on Election Day.

  • every point, every single word = fact. Sad though the western world’s head is still in the desert sand & saddest of all is that our Jews again are at the head of the line that it can’t happen again.

  • Emmett

“Chickenshit” is an understatement to describe a corrupt leftist traitor who harms Israel just as much, if not more than his counterpart in the U.S..

    • rachel robinson

The only thing left for him to do to “show” who he is by calling a much more accomplished leader names. So stupid it is beyond words.

    • Lynnea B Marks

We all know this administration is anti- semetic along with all their other prejudices. I hope the Jewish people know now how our democrats are never looking out for Isreal. I pray for Isreal as they are Gods most beloved and God Bless those that Bless them. I pray our next election changes our ways back to the close allies we have always been.

    • Don Corrigan

I am a neophyte as far as the nuances of Israel politics are concerned. Don’t talk in code, use your real name, and state you preferred outcome. Just in case you are interested I am Canadian, secular and support the right of Israel to exist and encompass all of the traditional territories of the Jewish people. I don’t support the Mo come lately Islamic claim to those lands.

  • Denise

My thoughts exactly and happy to read them here. Just know that the informed Anericans stand with Israel….

  • Gregg Solomon

Obama is either naive, ignorant, and wowed by himself, or believes the “West” is the cause of all the problems of the world, reversing or at least establishing parity between the “West” and the non-West is right, and wowed by himself.

And how funny, Obama having his administration call Netanyahu, a veteran of not just the military but of combat.

And how funny, Obama who is recognized as spineless, yet so self-impressed, calling Netanyahu coward.

Remember when President elect Obama had himself photographed with his shirt off coming out of the water in Hawaii to show his chest (somewhat anemic) and macho, followed soon after by a picture of Putin, in the mountains, on a horse, with his shirt off clearly saying 1) you have to be kidding, 2) you look like, and 3) you are a wimp.

Here’s a a word for Obama: schmuck, a dangerous schmuck because of the job he has.

  • HaroldT

Why does Goldberg not name the chickenshit official?

    • Mark_NYC

I am of two minds about Goldberg’s role in all this. On the one hand, spreading these kinds of malicious anonymous comments about the Prime Minister of Israel does considerable damage to that country and its leader. From his own comments in the Atlantic, he seems to be almost in agreement with the attitudes of his sources, and as has been pointed out in the press, it’s no accident that these comments were made to him since all too often Goldberg acts as a Jewish mouthpiece for the Obama administration. On the other hand, aren’t we better off knowing what these creatures in the Obama administration are thinking and what they have in mind for Israel? No matter what, it can’t be forgotten that Goldberg, an American Jew, volunteered to enlist and fight for Israel in the IDF.

obama is a lowlife. in every regard he is ignorant and duplicitous. his narcissistic rage masks the emptiness of an ignominious grifter whose obsessive envy at not being who and what the Prime Minister actually is, becomes psychologically unmanageable. obama’s mental aberration is one over which he seems to have no control.

    Well said

    • Accountablity involves action. The name of this individual must be disclosed and he must resign or be fired from the Obama administration. Israel should not accept anything less.

      • What a wonderful novel way to get rid of an incompetent president!!!

      • Raymond in DC

Obama (and Biden) can’t be fired, only impeached. And Obama won’t fire Kerry or Rice or Rhodes or Jarrett, all “senior government officials”, and possibly sources for the myriad slurs against Israel’s PM.
