U.S. National Security Adviser Susan Rice ridiculed Israel’s Ambassador to Washington, Ron Dermer, for spending time with Republican casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, The Washington Free Beacon reported on Monday.

According to the report, Rice was asked in a recent meeting with a top American Jewish leader why she had not held meetings with Dermer. She responded, “He never asked to meet me.”

“Besides, I understood that he’s too busy traveling to Sheldon Adelson’s events in Las Vegas,” she added, referring to the major Jewish philanthropist who also owns Israeli daily Israel Hayom.

Haaretz reported that Rice was referring to Dermer’s attendance as guest of honor at a gathering of the Republican Jewish Coalition in March. The event, the newspaper claimed, proved that Dermer continues to “dabble in American domestic politics as a sympathizer with the red, Republican side.”

Rice asserted in a Twitter post last week that U.S-Israel relations remain stronger than ever. “As I said yesterday, U.S.-Israel security relationship is stronger than it has ever been,” she tweeted.

What the US is doing is not reassuring. “Having your back’ is Chicago speak too vague and unreliable. Bibi has seemed to be a thorn in Mr. O’S side because Mr.O doesn’t want to divulge his State Department’s plans. O’s stalling must have signaled Bibi that something was afoot. Since then State has declared itself off limits to Bibi. What balm can the US offer Israel for one alleged to be a close ally? The US strategy is not risk free unless Russia can store Iran’s stockpile dependably, Chances of that?

Normally, I try to be analytical in reacting to developments like these, but Rice’s sarcasm about Ambassador Dermer evokes only the urge to wretch. Couple Rice’s snide, ad hominem remark with the vulgarity delivered through The Atlantic, just a few days ago, and we have a U.S. Administration proving that it has the mentality and maturity of a self-absorbed middle-schooler (actually, that is giving this Administration too much credit). As for Rice’s objections to Ambassador Dermer spending time with Jewish Republicans. . .Hmmm . . .Shall we actually believe that a political operative and former UN diplomat in the Obama Administration is so unschooled in diplomacy and politics that she fails utterly to grasp that it would be severely remiss of Dermer NOT to establish working connections with Israel’s only reliable supporters in the U.S.? Moreover, would any Ambassador to the U.S. in his right mind shun supporters in favor of spending time with the foul-mouthed insulters of Israel who now fill the halls of the White House?

  • Marv Hershenson

This person is an embarrassment and contributes to the non-existing foreign policy of the USA. She has a responsibility to reach out to the Ambassador. What a self-serving fool.
