Anti-Netanyahu Campaign Stoops to Antisemtism

A full-page ad in The New York Times asks "Who is Our Commander in Chief?" which promotes the anti-Jewish theory that Israel is trying to control the US government. Photo: NIAC.

The campaign against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to Congress has reached a new low, crossing the line that divides criticism of Israel from the darkest antisemitic canards.

We do not use the term “antisemitism” lightly. Criticism of individual Israeli leaders or specific Israeli government policies is of course perfectly legitimate. But every sober-minded observer understands that criticism of Israel is sometimes just a thin mask for promoting anti-Jewish stereotypes and conspiracy theories.

The campaign of whispers, leaks and rumors against Prime Minister Netanyahu this week dropped that mask and began promoting one of the ugliest anti-Jewish canards: that Israel is trying to control the United States government.

A full-page ad in The New York Times on Feb. 19 featured photos of a smiling President Obama and a scowling Prime Minister Netanyahu, under the headline: “Who is our Commander in Chief?”

Hamas Supporter to Receive Award From Harvard Student Group

He has publicly endorsed Hamas, and secretly schemed with Hamas' supporters to thwart US-led peace efforts in the Middle East. Now Nihad Awad is preparing for a prestigious...

The message could not have been more clear: the Israelis –the Zionists, the pro-Israel lobby, the Jews– are trying to turn Israel’s prime minister into America’s commander in chief.

The ad proceeds to accuse Netanyahu and pro-Israel congressmen of trying to “start a war” by opposing President Obama’s deal with Iran. “The Jews are dragging us into a war” is one of the oldest antisemitic lies in circulation.

One of the most notorious examples of this line is the infamous speech by Charles Lindbergh to an “America First” rally in Iowa in 1941. He charged that “Jewish groups in this country” are “agitating for war” (against Nazi Germany).

“Jews (or Zionists, or Israelis) controlling the government” is another well-worn slur. It received a huge boost in 2007, with the publication of “The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy,” by Professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, which argued that Israel and its lobby in Washington control America’s Mideast policy and dragged America into the Iraq war. Not surprisingly, the book received fulsome praise from those who dislike Israel, such as former Carter administration national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski.

According to Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League, Mearsheimer and Walt were promoting “a classic antisemitic canard about Jews, having disproportionate power and control, that Jews only care about themselves.” Even Aaron Miller, a former State Department peace processor known for his pro-Palestinian slant, characterized Mearsheimer and Walt’s thesis as “a dangerous, dark trope” that “coexists with other hateful and, yes, antisemitic canards about how Jews control the media and the banks, and the world as well.”

So who sponsored the Feb. 19 ad? The average reader of the New York Times would not be able to tell, because for some reason the sponsoring organization tried to obscure its identity. Instead of listing its name and officers, it simply listed a web site– niacouncil.org. Those who visit that site discover that the sponsor is the National Iranian-American Council (NIAC), a group with an innocent-sounding name but with a not-very-innocent agenda.

NIAC lobbies to end US sanctions on Iran, and urges Americans to be more conciliatory toward the Iranian regime. Last month, it circulated a fundraising appeal accusing Congress of “following Israel’s lead on Iran,” complete with a distorted quote from a senator allegedly saying to the Israelis, “We will follow your lead.”

NIAC’s founder and director is Trita Parsi, a young Iranian-American academic who authored a book about US-Israel relations called “Treacherous Alliance.” The title alone speaks volumes. Zbigniew Brzezinski called it “penetrating” and “very timely.” No surprise there.

Two important questions arise.

First, several mainstream former US officials, such as ex-Under Secretary of State Thomas Pickering, ex-Deputy Assistant Secretary of State John Limbert, and ex-Congressmen Wayne Gilchrist, and Jim Moody, are members of the NIAC Advisory Board. Will they remain on the board, despite the group’s despicable ad in the New York Times?

Second, was the ad coordinated with anybody in the White House? The question must be asked, not only because the ad’s message coincides with the Obama administration’s attacks on the Israeli government, but because, according to Omri Ceren in Commentary, Parsi “has been called to the White House, lectured at the CIA and visited Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. He boasted in internal e-mails that he learned of Mr. Obama’s speech to Iranians on the occasion of the Persian New Year in March [2010] several hours before it was posted on the Internet.” Dr. Parsi needs to explain when was the last time he had contact with any White House official, and what did they discuss?

Moshe Phillips is president and Benyamin Korn is chairman of the Religious Zionists of America, Philadelphia, and both are candidates on the Religious Zionist slate (www.VoteTorah.org) in the World Zionist Congress elections.

Sorry about the other comment… I had pasted the article in to respond to various aspects of it and forgot to take it out at the end of my stuff.

Here we go… Israel dragging the US into war is an idea that is actually the reverse of the truth.

A while back Cheney was in Israel and encouraged the Israelis to strike Iran.

He should have been jailed in the US for encouraging a foreign country to military action, but the truth is he’s still part of the (very Gentile) cabal that rules the United States, and they don’t rule on Israel’s behalf.

The US has been promising Russia for more than 20 years that they wouldn’t bring it’s former East Bloc allies into NATO, and has steadfastly been breaking that promise every step of the way.

The US would love to occupy Iran because it’s one more country right on Russia’s border that they would then control.

And contrary to the propaganda of the neo nazi types, Israel isn’t using the US – the US is using Israel, or at least trying to.

This also has occurred in relation to Syria.

The US was told “No” to an invasion of Syria by both Russia and China, and then began backing the radical groups to overthrow Assad. Among them was ISIS.

That’s how ISIS got so strong over the last two years.

What about when the rocket was fired from Syria? Did Netanyahu really believe that Assad had ordered ONE SINGLE rocket fired at the only country that has the means to significantly harm his armed forces in a short time, or did Obama ask Netanyahu to pretend to believe it?

That day or the next Israeli planes struck nine Syrian government forces targets in Syria.

It was very obvious to anyone seriously looking at the situation that rebel forces fired that rocket to give Israel a pretext to strike, and that strike was on behalf of the US.

Netanyahu knows that is dirty business, and he made a speech the next day where he talked about something like “…what kind of friends a nation has”. I’m paraphrasing but that was the gist of it.

He clearly was talking about the people currently in charge of the US government.

Meanwhile despite him going along with US plans Obama has still been treating him like a rented mule.

I don’t like Obama, and Kerry has delusions of grandeur.

Netanyahu is right. Israel can find better friends.

The fault lies much more with US politicians who, as the rest of the world recoils from Israel’s misdeeds, trample one another to supply even more funding and protection from international censure.
Christian fundamentalists, who believe Israel is important in bringing about the End Times, must also take a share of the blame.

The New York Times hide the reports of the gas chambers that killed 6,000,000 Jews in the back of their paper! Not much has changed in 70 years!

  • Better than the commander in chief that we have.

  • Reform School

Full-page ads don’t come cheap even the Jerkwater Journal. With the New York Times’ huge circulation, how much money do full-page ads cost? Where does a college professor get that kind of money? Is the New York Times a co-sponsor?

Would the New York Times print a similar ad supporting Congress’ rights to speech, assembly and association, with anonymous sponsors?

Voters seriously need to ask: “Why has this President not yet been impeached, tried, convicted and removed from office by Conress, for his overt campaign to overthrow the Constitution of the United States?”

    • Joyce Bross

I have been questioning that also. President Obama is a Emperor Wannabe. I totally agree with your comments!

      • The answer to your question is quite simple…Let me start by saying that my Brother in Law is a die hard Left Wing Democrat, and is absolutely in love with President Obama, everything he does, and everything that Obama has done to get him into the highest office in the land.

Saying all of this tripe means that when we have had conversations concerning President Obama, and or any member of his cabinet, and I as a Conservative said something negative about Obama, he would immediately call me a racist, and that would end any discussion on whatever we were talking about.

No body wants to be labeled a racist over anything, and it seems that the lame street press immediately brands anyone a racist once they criticize Obama. Naturally we all tend to either look the other way, or completely shut our mouths. This is the reason why Republicans in both houses of Congress, keep quiet on all of the antics this President has pulled. Whom among them wants to be called a racist?

As for my Brother-in Law…I refuse to even say hello to him or communicate in any manner. Regardless of his Ph.D and other University degrees, he still is a bigoted idiot,

we have the wors president a Muslim president what are we expecting

He never like israel never , I cannot believe we vote for a Muslim president what is worong with us,

The New York Times, a periodical which described the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and the Treblinka death camp without finding it necessary to make use even one time of the term “Jew” in its description of the events is a rather interesting organism for study. Professor Laurel Leff (Northeastern Univeristy) did just this in a rather in depth examination entitled: ‘Buried By The Times’.

One would hope after the release of Leff’s book–in addition to an admission by the Times itself and an apology–that critical thinkers would use more worthy sources to obtain the news of the day. Sadly, this is not the case. For Jew haters regardless of incarnation–be it the traditional racist or the modern “gentleman” who hides himself behind the anti-Semitic Maginot Line of Israel bashing, the NY Times will continue to be the gift that keep on giving!

  • D.medin

Shocking, what is being done about it? What can be done to this organization to cripple it ? What if the president of the US is an active participant?
What is the ADL doing about it?

    • Bob Steinberger

You ask about the ADL. Don’t look for any help from this organization, including it’s boss Abe Foxman. This organization, under Foxman, has joined Obama in condemning Netanyahu and his speech before congress.

Sounds like just another court jester making his presence heard in order to curry favors and grab another 15 minutes of fame.

  • Bev Wotton

So who sponsored the Feb. 19 ad? Instead of a name, it simply listed a web site- niacouncil.org. – the National Iranian-American Council (NIAC), a group with an agenda.

Is it any wonder ‘they’ wouldn’t list ‘their’ Organization? Isn’t this what ALL ‘COWARDS’ do, when their not wearing Masks?, and given it’s the National Iranian-American Council (NIAC), one must assume it’s redundant to suggest ‘they’ do ‘their’ homework to get their FACTS right when ‘lurid Propaganda’ is their Agenda, however “they” can check ‘their’ History as far back as existance so-o-o,

Enough already! YOU guys are becoming nauseating and the FREE World’s huge pain in the ass; it’s obvious You and Your Obama President are not worthy of the opportunities afforded you here or to live in this great country the United States of America so why don’t you just go back to Iran and or wherever you are from where you won’t be such a huge embarrassment… while you still can.

Given this ‘Great and FREE Country’ was founded and built on G-d fearing Christian Principles, you are treading on hallowed ground, G-d is not dormant, He’s watching ALL You who are of like mind and I can promise You, You will not like what He has Scripturely Documented what He is going do to ‘those of You’ who come against His People and His Anointed (Jews & Christians) and their lands, beginning with Israel – Check it out, one of many places to start is the Book of Isaiah. “The Fear of G-d is the beginning of Wisdom” (His words not mine) Notwithstanding, there’s “No-One” born, nor nothing built that can come against Him. You can check that out also.

Singing G-d’s Praises, in G-d do We Trust! It’s a great, great day to be alive and truely blessed!

    • Joyce Bross

Bev Wotton, I couldn’t agree more with your comments. Amen and G_D bless you, America and Israel. I can’t wait until America has a G_D fearing president!

  • For some reason, or another, since Barack Hussein Obama became President, the Islamic World, Iran in particular, has been able to manipulate US action, policies, and the WH philosophy, a dangerous and alarming situation.
The National Iranian-Council (NIRC), particularly since Obama’s confidant, and “power behind the thrown,” Valerie Jarrett is of Iran birth and loyalties.
The Muslim Word, led by Iran in the area of public relation, uses the terms, Zionism, and Israel as trigger point for pushing Jihads, and other actions for promoting world-wide anti-Semetism.

  • This is nonsense.

This entire fiasco was planned to stir up the Republican conservative base here and the Likud base for the coming elections in Israel as well as poking Obama in the face.

No where in that add does the word “Jew” even mentioned, only a country and its leader.

The ad only accuses Netanyahu and pro-Israel congressmen of trying to “start a war” by opposing President Obama’s deal with Iran.

As an American I am tired of these wars around the world being waged by my government to control geopolitics. And I especially don’t want a leader from a foreign country telling the American government what to do, let alone snubbing the President in the process.

I wouldn’t mind if the Iranian leader was also allowed to present his point of view but that would require open mind on the part of the US Congress, something that is seriously lacking.

As far as it goes, I don’t like the governments of No. Korea, Saudi Arabia, Israel or my own government for that matter to name just a few, but that does not make me anti-atheist, anti-Muslim or anti-Jew, or anti-Christian only a person who doesn’t like any government that kills and maims the innocent for any reason what so ever and spends most of it money on their military/industrial complex.

  • The very idea that all the blame is being heaped on Bibi’s head for accepting this invitation to speak before a joint secession Congress is wrong. The real culprit who started this hell fire was none other than our Speaker of the House. His hatred of the President is at the core of this. Do the people of the USA think that our Representatives do not understand the danger’s from Iran? If they don’t then we surely voted for the stupidest people to represent us all in Congress.

To think that the biggest donors to elect Obama were the Jews..TURKEYS voting for XMas…..

  • Dany Toren

And we thought that Carter was bad……Carter gave us the Mad Mullahs and Obama is letting these same Mad Mullahs to go nuclear…..

  • Dany Toren

Instead of “Who is our Commander in Chief” It should be “Who should be our Commander in Chief…..No prizes for guessing too easy…Bibi Of course…

  • There will be no foot prints but rest assured that Parsi knew what Obama wanted because Obama has explicitly stated that those in Congress who oppose his deal are doing so because of Jewish donors, another slur. Just read what Obama’s people said in response to Sen. Menendez’ comment earlier in the month that Obama’s remarks about the deal with Iran “sound like talking points coming from Tehran.” Obama’s people replied that they understood why Menendez made the comment: because of his “donors”.

The fact of the matter is that Obama would not mind at all if Iran gets a nuclear bomb. This is for a number of reasons: 1- He is an appeasor, a weakling, who cannot stand up to the Mullahs; 2- He detests Israel and views Israel as an interloper in the Middle East, a colonial power that needs to be put in its place; 3- He believes that the USA acquired its super-power status not because of the freedom that has allowed its people to reach heights never before seen in civilization but because it was stolen from the Third World and that Israel has done the same.

  • judithg

mr. obama is a low and vulgar grifter. likely, he is not just a garden variety muslim but a radical extremist muslim, the media twitter term for the savage beasts of islam.
clearly, he is an antisemite. that’s proven in his dismissive attitude toward the muslim hate crimes against Jews and his eagerness to see the destruction of the Jewish nation state. of course, they’re his brudders so in that regard it’s understandable. those he surrounds himself with are merely corrupted sycophants, not terribly intelligent, willing to embarrass themselves disseminating lies and canards about Jews because that’s what gets this crowd their paycheck.
mr. obama does not support Israel, nor does he support el sisi in Egypt, nor does he support the Kurds.
he is a toxic brew and under no circumstances to be believed and certainly not to be relied upon. for anything.

  • The influence of Iran is advancing ,by the minute, they have infiltrated the White House,on the highest level. Iran has taken control of Yemen , next step the Shiite majority in Saudi Arabia ,building bases on the Golan heights, total control of Lebanon . OnThe Obama administrations watch and time line…….

Any country that wishes to harm Israel … BEWARE, you cannot escape the wrath of GOD ALMIGHTY!

Disgustingly, these conspiracy theories are becoming ‘the thing to believe’ in far too many circles. Just read Discus and the vicious posts there, and you will have an idea that this horror of Antisemitism is far more prevalent then might be thought. Far too many ‘people’ accept this vile nonsense as fact.

  • Stan

I’d love to know whether Obama’s sole trusted lieutenant, Iranian-born Valerie Jarret, is a member of NIAC. That might go a long way in explaining why Obama is enabling the Iranians to develop nuclear weapons.

  • Arnold Kezsbom

Does anyone still read the N.Y. Times? The once celebrated New York Newspaper has as much credibility as the NationalEnquirer. American citizens are not fools and can’t and won’t be fooled by Islamic radicalism. The world, let alone American’s, knows that Iran is funding ISIS and any development of nuclear weaponry by Iran will only result in Nuclear Holocaust. Iran, ISIS and the collective terrorist subsidiaries, will continue to assult the American public with its anti-Semitic and anti-Christian rhetoric but we are not fools! Nearly 80% of the American population wants to hear what Mr. Netanyahu has to say. Mr. Obama and his pseudo intellectual JV staffers together with the failed Carter administration can’t and won’t pull the wool over the eyes of the American population!

    • Joyce Bross

A true comment … Americans are not at all stupid as President Obama and his protege Gruber seem to believe … The majority of Americans know exactly where President Obama’s loyalties stand and his loyalty are not with Christians.

  • Everyone associated with ad is a total antisemite as per the wise and prescient words of Dr Martin Luther King Jr spoken in March 1968: “When people criticize Zionists, they mean Jews. You’re talking antisemitism.”

  • anon

Obama told the black caucus that Netanyahu was disrespecting him because he’s black. Since no-drama Obama has been furious with Obama for almost his whole presidency maybe we can that turn that around and say Obama’s disrespecting the only Jewish head of state.

  • Richard Kirschenbaum

Were Netanyahu to place the fate of his country in Obama’s ability to dissuade Iran from its oft stated goal of a second holocaust, he would be criminally negligent.
This is analogous to Munich in 1938 with Obama in the Neville Chamberlain role and Bibi in that of Edvard Benes.
Fortunately Israel carries a somewhat bigger stick than the Czechs did.
