Israel says it will purchase 14 additional next-generation F-35 fighter jets for approximately $3 billion.

Israel’s defense ministry said Sunday the deal adds to the fleet of 19 U.S-made jets it already purchased in 2010. The recent signing with Lockheed Martin Corp. includes an option for 17 more in the future. The first such planes are to arrive in Israel in late 2016.

    there is nothing about the f-35 that is right for israel – the purchase price is too high, and the operating cost is twice that of the existing f-15s and f-16s. plus, the f-15 stealth would be half the price, and require no retraining. there is no regional opponent that requires any special features of the f-35, and iaf deployment of the f-35 will only happen long after the iranian crisis is over. (at least 2-3 years, if there are no unexpected glitches.)

    other than that, a wonderful, shiny new toy.
