Less than a week before his planned speech to Congress on the Iranian nuclear threat, tensions between Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Obama have continued to escalate.

Quoting senior US officials, The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House’s hostility to Netanyahu is borne out by the fact that President Obama views Netanyahu as the most serious threat to his efforts to secure an agreement with the Iranians on their nuclear program.

The report alleged that senior officials have attacked the upcoming speech’s credibility and influence, by presenting the Prime Minister as an automatic opponent to any deal with Iran, without regard to its terms and without alternative approaches. They claimed that Netanyahu is not calling for tougher sanctions to produce a better agreement, but is only expressing unconditional opposition to any agreement.

Other White House officials added that the current deterioration in Israeli-American relations is different than those which have occurred in the past. Disagreements in the past have centered on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, but this disagreement is much more critical, since it affects not just Israel, but the security of the entire world. They therefore argue that the tensions will likely continue even after the upcoming elections in Israel, because the disagreement between Netanyahu and Obama is a disagreement on core policy, not just on its execution.

President Obama’s national security adviser, Susan Rice, said on Tuesday that Netanyahu is undermining the long-standing tradition of bipartisanship in the US-Israel relationship and is “destructive of the fabric of the relationship.”

Sources close to Netanyahu have said that the Prime Minister finds himself in a bind: on the one hand, he desires to maintain good relations with the American administration, but on the other hand, he wants the Iranian nuclear threat against Israel totally removed. These sources have said that the Prime Minister has been forced to prioritize handling the Iranian threat because of the proximity of the deadline for talks on March 31.

Dore Gold, who served as an adviser to the Prime Minister on international affairs, said that “sometimes in the life of a nation, you have to make hard choices.” He noted that, “Iran is not some agreement about a settlement. This is a life-or-death question for Israel,” and compared Netanyahu’s predicament to former Prime Minister Eshkol’s, who agonized over launching a preemptive strike against the Arab military buildup in 1967.

That is extremely important for another, not immediately related reason. That is the question of Iran’s nuclear weapon. The Soviet Union had nuclear weapons right through the Cold War, but neither side used them because both sides were aware that if either one did the other would do the same and this would lead to mutual destruction – MAD as it was known at the time. Mutual assured destruction was the main deterrent preventing the use of nuclear weapons by the Soviets For most of the Iranian leadership MAD would work as a deterrent, but for Ahmadinejad and his group with their apocalyptic mindset mutually assured destruction is not a deterrent, it’s an inducement

Of course Israel is the only threat to a deal.

The US wants a deal no matter what. Only Israel has common sense while the world is pacified.

  • Ayatollah Ghilmeini

Good. If the deal is so good, why not present it to Congress?

If we are such good pals with Iran now, will they disband Hezbollah, the Quds Group and stop harboring al Qaeda and funding Hamas?

If Iran is giving up their nuclear weapons ambitions, they don’t need ballistic missiles, are they closing that program down?

But wait there’s more! Will they pull their advisors out of Yemen, Syria and Iraq? Will they release their political prisoners?

Every single aspect of this deal stinks. All of the risk land in Israel’s lap. If the administration presented an agreement that bridged the current nuclear impasse accompanied with real marked changes in Iranian-US relations, I could support it. But the deal is rotten to the core. Worse the Iranians are behaving like the New Persian Empire- choosing between dishonor and war, they have chosen dishonor and we will get war.

Jews and Israel have been sold out. Our lives mean so little to this president that he is willing to obfuscate the reason for Jews getting killed all the while punishing Israel for having the temerity for not willingly going to Iran’s nuclear strike on Israel just like the holocaust victims walked into the gas chambers.

No. No to this awful deal; no to this miserable excuse of a President and his foolish self aggrandizing diplomacy that can only bring ruin and destruction to Israel.

Jewish Democrats, you were warned but you are still and always will be my brothers and sisters, I am not even waiting to Yom Kippur to forgive you- you were true to your ideals, Obama was just not the man your ideals wanted you to believe he was. Whether intended or not, we have been sold out. We must resist this President’s folly. Failure to do so will be our end.

    • ronne

excellent comments, sold out, you nailed the entire debacle. As for Obama, you also accurately identified him. Thanks

Im going to take the time to write this because its important. Whether or not anyone will post it is another story. Im looking forward to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech. Please come Mr. Prime Minister. The LORD God of Israel , Maker of Heaven and earth and all that is in them, He is the One we should fear. The fear of man is a trap. Trust in the LORD and His Word. The days ahead and the future of Israel and the nations is already written , settled in the heavens forever. A time is coming when all the nations will turn against Israel,,But there is an expected end. Irans future has also been determined by the LORD. The battle is spiritual, its the LORD GOD , its because of His Name that the enemy is hostile towards you. Beware of the man who will come with a seven year peace agreement. He will break it after 3 1/2 years and turn against you. See the writings of Daniel the prophet chapter 9. May the LORD of Sabaaoth, Messiah King and our Redeemer, be with you. May the LORD GOD give you wisdom and understanding of His Word by the Ruach HaKodesh, so that you will know what to do. Be strong in the LORD and the power of His might. Trust in Him always. The whole world ultimately will have to give an account to Him. In the last days He will come from heaven with the clouds and every eye will see Him, and He will put down His enemies. The government will rest upon His shoulders. He is the heir, the Son of God, the Son of David, the Seed of Abraham, the faithful God and true witness. The LORD is salvation. Both Lamb of GOD and the Lion of the tribe of Judah. We have peace with GOD through Him and the promise of eternal life. Wars have been determined, but the whole world (both Jew and Gentile) can have hope and peace in Him. Yehoshua of Nazerth, the Branch is His Name. The Good Shepherd of Israel who came to seek and save that which was lost and laid His life down , as a Lamb without blemish or spot, that He might destroy the works of the devil and redeem us to GOD by His own blood. We have redemtion through faith His blood. He rose again and ascended back into heaven with the cloud. This commandment He received from the Father. This same Jesus will come again with with the clouds and great glory to trample His enemies and to save the remnant of Israel and all those who believe and have lived through the great tribulation and the Day of the LORD, the Day of His vengeance. See Zechariah 12. A word to our President, repent! And believe the good news. Turn from your ways to the LORD. You are putting us all in danger. See Genesis, its in the bible, there is a blessing for being good to Israel and also a curse. Search and see how GOD has dealt will her enemies in the past. Search the scriptures(which you say with words, you believe) Mr. President, think biblically, its not too late. Shalom.

Excuse me but where IS Netanyahu’s alternative policy?

Ask yourself right now what it is

That is the real problem – Obama is right.

The writer of this article says of Bibi “he wants the Iranian nuclear threat against Israel totally removed”

But HOW! Apart from being morally questionable, military action would likely only turn a possibility into a certainty

So what’s the other lever that Netanyahu has thought of?

Empty vessels make most sound. What has Bibi to say that we all aren’t fully aware of already? What is he offering to shift the goalposts on negotiations? Closing Settlements and ending Occupation is all that he has, and the extremist Zionists aren’t going to let him do that

He has painted himself into a corner. I accept he’s not a bad guy and understandably popular but Obama would be right in thinking that he is now a major part of the problem.

    • sandra

It is interesting that the same criticism expressed toward Netanyahu is the same that Obama and his followers use for everything that does not agree with him or support what he wants. He accuses them of not having an alternative plan or that they do not want to compromise. It is Obama who thinks he knows all and that only his plan is the best. He is very arrogant. He is not a democratic leader but thinks he is a “king”. God is the ruler yet and when you go down a path contrary to HIS you will lose.

  • Emanuel

If the “deal” where P+5 concede everything in a secret deal and allow Iran nuclear weapons capabilities in exchange for good behavior for a few years while their non-secret non-weapons sites are inspected HOW is ONE JEW GIVING ONE SPEECH going to mess up all that hard work and those strong fundamentals? does the deal take away free speech, what is the linkage between Bibi speaking and a deal falling apart? I unconditionally oppose any agreement made with Iran in secret that deals with their nuclear weapons program, is that not fair? Should we want another Iran contra scandal? Whats with all the heroin coming from Mexico and Iran in the last 3 years and that lame story about dollars being smuggled into Iran to beat sanctions?

  • Yoel Nitzarim

This title denigrating the Israeli prime minister breaks my heart into tiny pieces! I taught English in high schools, colleges and universities in the Chicago area from 1980-2013. I had always tried to speak positively and optimistically about the US-Israel alliance throughout all those years when I taught literally thousands of students. And now? I am ashamed of the executive branch of my government in America, ashamed that at this crucial time in Israel’s history the White House and the Obama administration is making a mockery of my prime minister and the ties it has with the Jewish State. What a fall they have taken from the hopeful days some six years ago! I know that most Americans are pro Israel and most Congressmen and women are pro Israel, irrespective of their respective party lines. Israel is the lone beacon of light in the Middle East; the lone democracy; the lone refuge for any Jew who wishes to become part of it. It is my homeland; it is my heart and soul. I love it more than my own life and then some. I am writing this from my table in my apartment on Rav Kook Street in Jerusalem. How terribly sad! Shabbat Shalom!

  • Historians in the future will look at Netanyahu’s speech to Congress on March 3, 2015 as the turning point. The day the world was told that it cannot live in an illusion of peace, when apocalyptic, eschatology driven fanatics want to destroy it. The day it was told that the Jewish people will not permit that a third of its population be annihilated twice in a century.

The Clinton Foundation has been receiving large $$$$ donations from Qatar, Algeria and Oman amongst other Middle Eastern countries. Could our President have also benefitted from their generosity? I see some disturbing parallels between President Obama’s remarks and those of former President Jimmy Carter, who received millions from Arab donors. If it walks like a duck……..

Netanyahu is merely doing what that cowardly traitor, Obama should be doing.

Cowardly traitor? This is America not Israel.
