French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said in a weekend interview with The Wall Street Journal that the anti-Israel and anti-Zionist sentiments spreading in French society have all the necessary elements to be considered antisemitism.

The new type of Jew-hatred began in the 1970s, according to Valls, and he described it as having “all the components of antisemitism, the old ones,” including a “plot”-based view of imagined Jewish conspiracies.

“Step by step,” the elites’ anti-Semitism “followed a migration and impacted young people in the poor neighborhoods,” Valls said.

“There will always be a couple of idiots who desecrate Jewish cemeteries—the petit Nazis,” Valls added. “But unfortunately I think that the anti-Semitism that struck French society is much deeper than that. In 2013 or 2014, you have people in the streets of Paris chanting ‘Death to the Jews!’ And in all the attacks in Paris or the attacks in Copenhagen, targeting the Jews is really at the heart of their motivation.”

The prime minister has been among Europe’s most vocal advocates for the Jewish community and was recently the target of an antisemitic smear himself when former Socialist Foreign Minister Roland Dumas claimed that Valls’ policies were influenced by his wife’s Jewishness. Valls is married to renowned violinist Anne Gravoin, who is a French Jew.

Dumas claimed in a television interview that Valls “has personal alliances that mean he has prejudices. Everyone knows he is married to someone really good but who has an influence on him.” He later refused to apologize for the remarks.

Valls told The Wall Street Journal that Dumas’ comments did not affect him “at a personal level.”

“Except that I felt that I was dirtied all over,” he explained. “But I immediately understood that when a former minister, a president of the Constitutional Council, says something, his words have a lot of influence for young people. It gives justification for how they think.”

  • The roots of French anti-Semitism? Look no further than to the sainted Pope John XXIII’s prayer, that he penned shortly before his death and expresses much of Vatican II:
“”We realize now that many, many centuries of blindness have dimmed our eyes so that we no longer see the beauty of Thy Chosen PEOPLE AND NO LONGER RECOGNIZE IN THEIR FACES THE FEATURES OF OUR FIRSTBORN BROTHER. WE realize that our brows area branded with the mark of Cain. Centuries long has Abel lain in blood and tears, because we had forgotten Thy Love. Forgive us the curse which we unjustly laid on the name of the Jews. Forgive us that, with our curse, we crucified Thee a second time.”
    that says it all.
For further reading may I suggest:”The Popes Against the Jews” by David I Kertzer.
Then make up your own mind.

    Roland Dumas is a racist!
European antisemitism is compounded with Islamic antisemitism. Together they represent at least 34 centuries of antisemitism!
Socialism and antisemitism represent fundamental root cause of the slow destruction of Europe.
The US democrats are following in tow.

It is not hypocritical for left-wing fascist Communists like Foreign Minister Roland Dumas to collaborate with right-wing fascist Islamites. Hell calls to Hell.

  • Perhaps I am missing the point? Surely the State of Israel, created in response to our abject failure to save 6,000,000 Jews of The Holocaust is the spiritual home of ALL Jews. Does this mean that all Jews must live in Israel? I am Irish! Do I need to live in Ireland? Can I not live in England? Cannot the Jews live wherever they please knowing they have a home in Israel if they choose to live there?

Finally, a European government official stating the obvious; the core of the anti-Semitism in Europe is the good old home-grown Jew-hatred which has always been there. The Islamic component detracts from the historical anti-Semitism which has been woven throughout the nations of Europe since day one. At the conclusion of WWII, anti-Semitism went dormant and it is now reemerging with increasing force and lethality. Although we are currently focused on European anti-Semitism, it has reached global proportions. ‘Mein Kampf’ is the best-selling book in the Middle East, and ‘The Protocols of the Elders of Zion’ is enjoying strong sales once again. While it is encouraging to see PM Valls recognize this issue, it will remain to be seen if his government will be able to turn the tide, in France, or if Europe has waited too long to address the anti-Semitism which has been exploding over the last few years.

      Well said and sadly true.

  • Eric R.

What he is really saying is that Europe is a hopeless sewer of Islamist, Marxist and Nazi Jew-hatred; it cannot ever be corrected, and the only way Jews will survive is to get the f**k out.

‘The poor will always be with us’ alludes to the biblical concept that we will be burdened by those of poor spirit and poorer morals.
Anti-Semitic thought is a pernicious form of evil that requires little brain capacity and no thought.
It has nothing to do with Jews being Jews and everything to do with poor character of the culprits who offend with that sort of thought.
    Worse,…’the sins of the father…’

  • Any Israeli politician and leader must take into account that bickering and back-stabbing only weakens Israel. If they really care about Israel and its people and want Israel to survive in these difficult times. They must find unify in a common cause to work together to enhance Israel’s safety and security. They must learn how to overcome their differences, for the sake of Israel and its people. Any leader or elected or appointed official that pursues divisiveness and continues to incite conflict does not belong in a position to represent Israel and its people.
These bickering and back-stabbing must stop immediately.
