JNS.org – Researchers from Israel’s Hadassah Medical Center who gave a patient a cancer drug that is being studied as a possible treatment for rheumatoid arthritis discovered that the drug is also effective in treating alopecia areata, the autoimmune disease that causes baldness.

In most cases of alopecia—which is triggered by an inflammatory process around the hair follicle that causes it to fall out—hair loss is concentrated in the scalp, beard, and other parts of the body. Dr. Yuval Ramot, an attending physician in the Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases at Hadassah, said there are currently “no successful treatments for the disease.”

Netanyahu Presented With Plan to Transfer Some Eastern Jerusalem Neighborhoods to Palestinian Municipal Control

JNS.org - Knesset member Dr. Anat Berko (Likud) has presented Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a plan to separate some...

“There is treatment with steroids, which suppress the immune system and have serious side effects, and can’t be administered continually,” Ramot said, Israel Hayom reported.

The new Israeli-developed alopecia treatment was discovered by chance when a 16-year-old boy, who in addition to alopecia suffered from a genetic disorder, was given a drug called baricitinib.

“It was like a miracle. His hair started to grow in the bald spots that had resisted treatment for years,” said Ramot.

Subsequent experiments on mice carried out in conjunction with researchers from Columbia University, as well as clinical trials, found the drug is indeed effective in treating alopecia.

Baricitinib “belongs to a family of medicines… known as JAK inhibitors that are currently used to treat inflammatory diseases or cancer,” Ramot explained.

“Since the mechanism at the root of alopecia areata is a process of inflammation around the hair follicle, the use of inhibitors on that path can be effective against this disease as well,” he said. “There is also evidence from researchers throughout the world that drugs from the same family have been shown effective in treatment-resistant patients.”

The research, which Ramot conducted with Professor Abraham Zlotogorski and Professor Yackov Berkun, was published in the EBioMedicine journal.

On June 6 I had surgery for a newly diagnosed Stage 3 colon cancer. I declined the recommended chemotherapy and felt better and better from that date. But six months later, on November 6, I had a CT scan followup that showed probable cancer in my lungs.

The oncologist said I had Stage 4 colon cancer metastasized to the lungs. Later I learned that the colon cancer surgeon believed the cancer in the lungs was unrelated to the colon cancer, an independent development. His reasoning was that colon cancer, even metastasized, grows very slowly, and the two lung tumors were growing fast.

The oncologist also said radiation wouldn’t help me. She recommended chemotherapy to retard my demise, but said chemotherapy wouldn’t cure the cancer. I asked the surgeon about my life expectancy. He told me that without chemo I probably had only two to three years to live-and not much more with chemo.

I was very distraught. I read everything I could find on the internet about alternatives to chemotherapy and radiation. I already had a list of twenty or so recommended substances that didn’t work, that my husband had tried for six months before dying of lung cancer in 2005. Then I hit upon a letter on the Internet by a man jimmy hart stating a tradomedical doctor from Africa had helped him eliminated small squamous cell cancer on his neck ,said someone told him about the doctor … I immediately asked how I could reach him, At the same time having my doubts, just about a week later Mr hart shared with me his email and cell number, i phoned him and we discussed for several hours I told him my story and he asked me to send him the latest CT scan I took so he would know how to approach it …Gladly today just after 4 weeks of herbal treatment , I am writing this testimony Cancer free, when I went back for another test I couldn’t believe it doctors said it has miraculously disappeared .Just like Mr hart did i am also sharing my testimony with the world because so many people out there needs this little piece of information .Thank you Mr hart for sharing your testimony and a bigger thanks to Doctor YENKEN….I was able to reach him here ..+2349033262493 or yenkentradomedical@gmail.com …..You can thank me later via Rosegal2002@gmail.com
