Snap back? Not so fast. The biggest enforcement provision in the preliminary nuclear agreement with Iran is turning into one of the mostly hotly contested elements. And the debate barely involves Iran.

Instead, it concerns the Obama administration’s promise to quickly re-impose sanctions on Iran if the Islamic Republic cheats on any part of the agreement to limit its nuclear program to peaceful pursuits.

The whole idea of snap back is ridiculous. The entire deal being negotiated is a ridiculous farce.
Sanctions may be snapped back in place, but sanctions take a long to have the desired effect – because the country will continue to use existing stocks until they become short. Iran has continued it nuclear program despite the sanctions, and the only the long continuation of the sanctions has created pressure on them. The effect of the sanctions is a long, gradual process.
So long as the West displays its absolute abhorrence of the military option, the Iranians recognise this situation and will play for time, as they have been so successfully doing for several years. Why on earth should they give up their program ? They are winning.
Even if the deal is adhered to by the Iranians (who so far have been cheating and lying all the time)- the Iranians have been given the green light to get their bomb in 10 years time. What kind of deal is THAT ? Does it only matter that they don’t get the bomb while Obama is President, and after that it becomes OK ? Is somebody asleep on the job ?
