JNS.org – Residents of Israel’s Gaza-border communities were not surprised by the new Israeli defense establishment reports that Hamas commander Mohammed Deif is likely alive and back in charge of the Palestinian terrorist group’s military operations, nor were they surprised by recent reports that Hamas has resumed building terror tunnels and manufacturing rockets.

“The reports that Hamas is getting stronger militarily, and the fact that the group is continuing to dig attack tunnels toward Gaza border communities, come as no surprise to any resident from the area,” Yael, a member of Kibbutz Nirim, told Israel Hayom. “All the residents know which path we’re headed down, everyone sees what Hamas is doing on the other side of the fence, and it’s doing it flagrantly, right there before our, and the military’s, eyes, showing its preparations for the next round of fighting.”

Roni Kissin, the secretary of Kibbutz Kerem Shalom, is trying to remain optimistic.

“We will always have tunnels, we already had them during the Gilad Shalit abduction [in 2006],” he said. “Despite all the talk about the winds of war on the other side of the fence, we continue to live and run our lives, absorbing new families [to the kibbutz]; children are being born. All the bad news is not something that has changed our lifestyle. We chose to live in Kerem Shalom, and there is no fear in our hearts. We trust the army to do its duty. We live 50 meters (164 feet) from the border—believe me, we have not woken up to something new. This is our reality.”

Knesset Member Haim Yellin (Yesh Atid), a member of Kibbutz Be’eri and until recently the head of the Eshkol Regional Council, said the situation needs to be resolved.

“Almost a year has passed since Operation Protective Edge, and Israel’s government is not working to prevent the next round of fighting,” Yellin said. “Mohammed Deif, dead or alive, will not stop the countdown to the next war. Terrorism needs to be fought with resolute strength, but at the same time working with world powers, especially moderate Arab nations, to achieve quiet and a diplomatic horizon.”

  • I need to clear up something. In terms of what you called “The next War” in your piece, what needs to be cleared up immediately is the facts, Israel is the terrorist. If they are preparing to bomb again this NOT called a War. Hamas has no Army, Navy, Air force, and high Tech weapons. They have small rockets that they make themselves. With the insistence of calling what Israel does in terms of Bombing from the Air with Jet Planes IS NOT< WAS NOT Palestinians are not permitted to leave GAZA nor are any people permitted to enter Gaza. Homes have been destroyed so most GAZANS are homeless. They have NO shelter. NO protection.Water that is unsafe for Human consumption and very little food. This past winter Children were frozen to death. Israel have used chemical weapons on GAZANS. White Phosphorus has been dropped on Civilians. Mostly children. This chemical burns a hole through the tissue of the body and continues to burn for hours Children are burned alive! in the most painful manner one can attempt to describe. This again, is NOT a WAR, and with the pain inflicted by Israel on GAZANS, who then is the terrorist? Israel is by far the most horrible of all Terrorists since the 2nd world War. Lets try to keep things in their proper perspective….Thank You BDS New York

Dr Please, you seem to quite knowledgeable. Every nickel that the PA receives from ME the tax payer, is used to build those small rockets that they use to terrorize the Israeli people. All the cement used to build tunnels to terrorize, not to build schools, they let churches build schools and play grounds so they can use them like a shield to fire those small rockets from. I said it once and now say it again. BOMB them back to the stone ages now. Destroy 2 million now keeps us from destroying 22 million later. Life is all about choices. They choose to be fighters, we choose to destroy them. Simple

what is the IDF waiting for? why are the tunnels, tunneling equipment, & terrorists being left undisturbed?

the IDF was asleep to the problem before “Protective Edge.” let’s hope that they are on the job now.

btw: the disgusting, morally-inverted, u.n. and e.u. continue to insist that Israel supply cement and other dual use materiel to terrorist government of gaza. they are all complicit in the crimes of the gaza jihadists.

The IDF should aggressively locate and destroy these tunnels as they are constructed. Both new and old tunnels must be eradicated.Indeed, operations against them must be ongoing even if it means attacking the surface construction and the builders.
