Iran’s semi-official state news agencies claimed on Tuesday that an Iranian destroyer chased off a U.S. warship and two reconnaissance aircraft that approached Islamic Republic flagged vessels in the strategic Gulf of Aden.

According to the reports, two US P-3C Orion maritime surveillance planes and a USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81) destroyer were forced to turn around after the Iranian destroyer, Alborz 72, issued warnings for them to change course and keep at least five miles from the Iranian Navy’s 34th fleet, which was stationed in the area.

Colonel Mostafa Tajeddini, the commander of the 34th fleet, commented that his ships are “duty-bound to monitor any foreign warships in international waters as well as anything that would threaten Iran’s national interests.”

Iranian news website Mehr claimed that the Iranian destroyer initiated the hostile move against the U.S. warship after it “approached several Iranian warships in a provocative move, ignoring the internationally set 5-mile standard distance from Iran’s 34th fleet of warships deployed in the Gulf of Aden.”

Tajeddini also dismissed reports in international media and by the Pentagon late last month that U.S. naval warships had forced Iranian navy vessels headed to Yemen to change their course in the Gulf of Aden. “The news reports by foreign media that we have changed our route after the US fleet’s arrival is only a media ballyhoo,” he said, adding that, “We have had communications with many naval units since we entered the Gulf of Aden, but no country has ever dared to warn the Iranian Navy.”

The 34th naval fleet is currently sailing through Yemen’s strategic Bab Al-Mandeb Straits, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is a major shipping way for Saudi and Gulf oil, and claims to be providing “security for Iranian and international merchant vessels,” according to Iran’s Press TV.

Mehr said that the 34th Fleet, comprised of the Alborz destroyer and the Bushehr helicopter-carrier warship, is “conducting anti-piracy patrols in the high seas and Gulf of Aden,” and its mission in the area will last about three months.

Despite these Iranian claims, Western media sources have noted that the Iranian ships are in the area to deliver weapons and other aid to Tehran’s Houthi proxies in Yemen.

An Iranian fleet versus a small destroyer and a couple of 30 year old patrol planes. I guess it was about even.

  • For sure Obama doesn’t have a response! How good are Iran’s fleet? Do they have subs? Quite relieved to hear (indirectly)Saudi & Iran are going head to head over Yemen and Houthis. With any luck they will annihilate one another and save us the bother of embarking on WWIII or WWIV as suggested by author Richard Hobbs book ‘Islam at war with the world’. Let us hope they wipe out each others oil refineries while they are at it. Say goodbye to Arab money flooding our money markets thus forcing Citibank, Goldman Sachs, HSBC plus others to re-think their banking practices i.e adopting sharia banking rules ‘no interest on capital base (capital supplied indirectly by clients & stockholders). Levies charged by Sharia range from 2.5% to 26% — charged indirectly to stockholders and clients as banking costs. Who are Islamic/Saudi charities? Al Qaueda is at least one! ‘Hawala’ dealers operate under sharia banking practice, dealing mega cash transfers and money laundering. A number of banks supporting sharia practices were after ’08 bailed out by UK, European and US tax payers all under the Obama administration! What chance have any of us got against not only IRAN but ISLAM?

Sounds like we have another Comical Ali – and I don’t mean the Commander In Chief at the White House.

Can anyone imagine that the country that once had Ronald Reagan as President could stoop so low.

The results of corrupt elections electing some third world Marxist/Muslim stooge, twice !

Israel should give thanks for having a PM such as Benjamin Netanyahu.

  • Irans version may be true because usa has not taken any initiative to release the Marshall islands ship and mr Kerry is in Somalia. So some thing might have happened. Iran is emboldened by the abduction of 444 Americans in 1979 and the capitulation by president carter. So they follow the same tricks.

I believe it!! A bunch of women and gays in our U.S. Military and a Muslim trader for a president.. Ha, ha, ha the USA is well on it’s way to being a third world country.

I am anxious to hear Obama’s response.

    • Walter Smith

Whatever his response, I am sure it won’t surprise many of us. He will likely appease them in any way he can in order to get that lopsided agreement he seems to be after.
