Israel has remained uncharacteristically silent amid several reports over the past few days signalling increased arms purchases by Egypt and Gulf countries.

According to a Foreign Policy report published on Wednesday, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee is not attempting to lobby Washington over what will likely be a huge arms transfer from the U.S. to Gulf countries, over fears of an expanding Iran.

“Israelis have been silent [about the arms deals to Gulf countries],” one congressional aide familiar with the issue told Foreign Policy. “Aipac was asking a lot of questions, but I wouldn’t characterize our interaction on this as lobbying.”

Israeli TV Report: Trump Lashed Out at Abbas During Bethlehem Meeting Over Palestinian Incitement

In addition, the Egyptian purchase of the advanced s-300 Russian missile defense system was of little concern to Israel because it doesn’t see hostility from its southern neighbor.

“We don’t see Egypt as the enemy,” an Israeli official told Reuters on Thursday, and an official in Cairo said Israel has nothing to fear.

“Israel has seen an opening with the Sunni Gulf states which has been very important, and with Egyptian President [Abdel Fattah] el-Sisi,” who opposes Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood,” said John Landis, associate professor and director for the Center of Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma.

Still, “Israel is engaged in a very realpolitik world,” Landis told the Algemeiner. “Most of the people that it’s working with don’t like it, don’t believe that Jews should be in the Middle East.”

So as Riyadh’s weapons imports continue to expand — they jumped 54% between 2013 and 2014 — the gain for Israel may be temporary.

“Saudi Arabia is a threat to Israel … the ideology it espouses … is equally antithetical to recognizing a Jewish state in Palestine,” said Landis.

Meanwhile on Thursday President Barack Obama opened a summit at Camp David with leaders from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf allies, to discuss the threat of expanding Iranian regional influence, the rise of Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen, as well as the front against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

US deputy national security adviser for strategic communication Ben Rhodes told reporters that the president updated the leaders on negotiations with Iran to restrict its nuclear program and Iran’s “destabilizing actions in the region.”

    Correction: I meant to write “Obama” instead of “Israel” regarding the lame stream press’s fawning attitude.

    I do not think too much can be read into Obama’s ‘summit.’ His motives have been obvious for a long time. His INTENT from the time he announced his initial run for the White House, has been to isolate and undermine Israel, and to provide aid and support to the most extreme cult of death branches of Islam, with whom he shares the goal of jihad. Gradually, over the past six plus years, his goal has become plainer and plainer, and his ‘deal’ with Iran is the culmination of years of effort. This summit is just to placate Iran’s enemies, so that they will continue to talk and not take action as Iran’s global jihad plans become more and more a reality. Obama is a stealth jihadist, who will not be satisfied until Israel is annihilated, and the US suffers a nuclear attack from his bosom buddies.

    Why has Obama not been removed? Because he has, through the tyranny of politically-coerced censorship, cowed nearly every Democrat in congress. Basically, he makes it clear to congress that you are either with him or a radical right winger. As the lame stream press has an uncritically fawning attitude towards Israel, his threat has strong teeth. As few Democrats wish to be thus labeled, they mutely watch Obama’s schemes become reality.

    The only chance to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons is if Democrats in congress come to their senses and oppose the Iran deal. If not, the first shots in the first nuclear war in world history have already been fired.

      Correction: I should have written “Obama” instead of Israel regarding the lame stream press’s fawning attitude.

    Obama is increasingly coming to resemble a kid playing with matches in the dry grass around a fuel storage tank. His cluelessness is threatening to create a conflagration that will make him responsible for the third highest number of deaths of any leader since the beginning of the Twentieth Century.

    And the point of all this? To avoid having to admit that is ideas are simply wrong.

  • The true problem is no really believes in G-D any more. And G-d knows this for a fact. look at Psalm 81.

    ט שְׁמַע עַמִּי, וְאָעִידָה בָּךְ; יִשְׂרָאֵל, אִם-תִּשְׁמַע-לִי. 9 Hear, O My people, and I will admonish thee: O Israel, if thou wouldest hearken unto Me!
    י לֹא-יִהְיֶה בְךָ, אֵל זָר; וְלֹא תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה, לְאֵל נֵכָר. 10 There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any foreign god.
    יא אָנֹכִי, יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ– הַמַּעַלְךָ, מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם;
    הַרְחֶב-פִּיךָ, וַאֲמַלְאֵהוּ. 11 I am the LORD thy God, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt; {N}
    open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.
    יב וְלֹא-שָׁמַע עַמִּי לְקוֹלִי; וְיִשְׂרָאֵל, לֹא-אָבָה לִי. 12 But My people hearkened not to My voice; and Israel would none of Me.
    יג וָאֲשַׁלְּחֵהוּ, בִּשְׁרִירוּת לִבָּם; יֵלְכוּ, בְּמוֹעֲצוֹתֵיהֶם. 13 So I let them go after the stubbornness of their heart, that they might walk in their own counsels.
    יד לוּ–עַמִּי, שֹׁמֵעַ לִי; יִשְׂרָאֵל, בִּדְרָכַי יְהַלֵּכוּ. 14 Oh that My people would hearken unto Me, that Israel would walk in My ways!
    טו כִּמְעַט, אוֹיְבֵיהֶם אַכְנִיעַ; וְעַל צָרֵיהֶם, אָשִׁיב יָדִי. 15 I would soon subdue their enemies, and turn My hand against their adversaries.
    טז מְשַׂנְאֵי יְהוָה, יְכַחֲשׁוּ-לוֹ; וִיהִי עִתָּם לְעוֹלָם. 16 The haters of the LORD should dwindle away before Him; and their punishment should endure for ever.
    ×™×– וַיַּאֲכִילֵהוּ, מֵחֵלֶב חִטָּה; וּמִצּוּר, דְּבַשׁ אַשְׂבִּיעֶךָ. 17 They should also be fed with the fat of wheat; and with honey out of the rock would I satisfy thee.’ {P}

  • My best guess is that The Middle East nations comprising Saudi Arabia and its like-minded neighbors,do not fear Israel and are not themselves actively interested in creating a world caliphate, even though that is one of the central foci of the Koran.
    However it seems that they (rightly) perceive IRAN as the big threat. It seems that their insight is clear into the ridiculousness of Israel becoming their enemy or wishing to
    invade them – unless possibly, in some way, it could become a necessity if Israel, and/or if the Saudis etc.were to be attacked by Iran.

  • correction Israel’s middle eastern nation NEIGHBORS

  • Israel holds her counsel, Israel observes and listens. The mobilization of Israel’s middle eastern nations is to the those of us outside of Israel worrying. However, having said this I believe with the backing of Germany meeting between BBN and Germany earlier this week there will be a dynamic shift in Europe vs not only so called Palestine but the rest of the Middle east. The US under Obama is less than trust worthy. It surprises me Obama has not been removed. I don’t believe the US should be arming any middle eastern nation including Egypt. Egypt still has not sorted out its problems between Copt and Muslim. El Sisi may well be pro-Israel but is the nation pro-Israel?

    Obama is an imbecile not qualified to discuss complex matters with heads of other states.

  • nelson marans

    Certainly, neither option can be entirely welcomed by Israel, namely militarily strengthened Islamic neighbors favoring its ultimate destruction nor an Iran that has made its intentions clear as far as the immediate eradication of the Jewish state. Caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, Israel sees as its greater threat an unopposed Iran in the region.

  • art

    Obama has been very successful isolating Israel. where the heck are the American Jewish leaders and the Democrats of “good faith” who have been intimidated by Obama. A grass roots campaign to Congress people is needed

  • dante

    however much the Arab states dislike Israel, they seem to understand (though not acknowledge) that Israel has no ambitions, interests, or claims that are in conflict with theirs (with exception of certain elective Muslim religious prejudices). in short, they can live with Israel. the Arab states cannot live with iran: iran is determined to assert itself as hegemon, in the region and beyond; Arab sovereignty and independence CANNOT coexist with the aggressive iranian regime.

    NB: iran has a very disdainful attitude toward the Arabs and others; the mullahs believe that they are superior in every respect and that dominion is their right. they also believe that, much as they outplayed obama (who is still without a clue), they can out-maneuver the Arabs.

  • At last maybe the enemy of my enemy is my “convienent” friend ?

    Who is this John Landis who thinks that the Saudis fear Israel more than Iran? When is the last time they fought against Israel? It’s a changed Middle East because of Iran and US inaction. (I have nothing against Oklahoma.)

  • Re the Obama-Bibi tiff, it may in fact be the Jewish state the president has now and has always had in his sights, regardless of who the state’s prime minister may be or what his or her politics are.
    A rumor now circulates that such is the man’s desperation to do a nuclear deal with Iran that he is prepared to offer the ayatollahs a $50 billion(US) signing bonus, i.e. the release of tens of billions in frozen Iranian funds.
    To placate Sunni apprehension, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are to be offered some mollification including approval to purchase advanced F-35 stealth fighter jets, thus significantly degrading Israel’s longstanding military edge. The deal would include GBU-28 bunker buster bombs.
    It all begins to look like a scheme calculated to significantly bolster the war powers of Israel’s enemies in the region. Nothing to say Sunni and Shia won’t turn all this fabulous weaponry on each other.

    Well, Churchill called Stalin an “ally” in order to destroy Hitler. As soon as the “allies” accomplished that Churchill delivered his iron curtain speech and the West’s cold war with the Soviets had begin.
