A sea turtle that was stranded on a beach in Tel Aviv on Friday was rescued by beach-goers in the area, Israel’s Channel 2 reported.

Local residents enjoying their day in the sun first noticed the turtle stranded in the sand. Initially they turned the turtle around, attempting to direct it to the sea, albeit unsuccessfully.

After some time, the turtle was taken to the Tel Aviv municipality’s veterinarian for further treatment.

One of the group who was present at the scene, Israel Nachman, told Channel 2 that “the turtle came ashore. At first, we thought it was dead, but after it came to shore, we saw that it was alive.”

“Everyone gathered around him,” said Nachman. “We tried to turn him around and return him to the water, but we were unsuccessful. Eventually, they took him in a municipal vehicle to the veterinarian.”

The turtle was then checked to see whether it choked on a plastic bag or something similar.
