On Sunday we will mark Tisha B’Av (pushed off a day so as not to be on Shabbat.) It is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, one that marks several tragedies that happened on that day. mostly the destruction of the Temples.

Usually I write a historical post on Tisha B’Av.

But this year it is hard to concentrate on anything but the danger of nuclear weapons being built for the purpose of destroying Israel.

Israel Is High on Medical Marijuana

JNS.org - Google CEO Eric Schmidt believes Israeli entrepreneurs succeed because they challenge authority, question everything and don’t play by the rules. “The...

The genocidal words from Iranian leaders indicate that destroying Israel is their top priority – not the economy, not the war in Iraq, but destroying Israel. They have dedicated an annual holiday just to call for Israel’s destruction. They have ensured that even during sanctions, their payments to Hezbollah remain sacred.

But Israel has a much larger problem.

The U.S. allowed this situation to happen. It was not just naivete in negotiating skills, although that played a part. If the White House truly wanted to minimize the possibility of Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon, it would not have given up concessions the way it did. It would not have communicated its message that the military option is impossible. It would not have publicly defended Iran’s cheating on its existing promises.

No, the Obama administration has made a conscious decision that a nation that encourages chants of “Death to America” is a better strategic partner than Israel (and the Gulf states.)

That goal of a long-term alliance with a crazed Islamic theocracy was more important than the goal of erasing nuclear weapons capability. Demands from Iran during the negotiations were not treated with derision but with the respect of a would-be suitor. “Well, of course Iran cannot be expected to cave on demand X, Y and Z – it would not be fair!”

The situation is mind boggling.  And now we are in a lose-lose situation, where the options have dwindled down to a nearly meaningless choice. Because President Obama chose the priorities, and those priorities do not include Israel.

Taking a long-term view, this is the direction that the U.S. is going anyway. College students are being poisoned against Israel and they are the leaders of tomorrow. This blog and many others regularly point out the hypocrisy of the “liberals” who embrace Iran and Hamas but it does not make a dent – logic does not enter the picture. As mainstream media uncritically parrots the lies of the Arabs, we can expect the trend to be less and less sympathy to Israel in the coming decades – and more sympathy for those who want to destroy Israel. The US will act like Europe in the not-too-distant future.  Israel will be alone, again.

Perhaps prayer on Tisha B’Av is the most logical response.

Have a meaningful fast.

6 comments, but here there are only two. Does it mean that 4 of them have been censored by the editor?
What Elder of Ziyon seems to be saying is that Israel is alone. That is true – however, today, we have our own state and army to defend ourselves – of course, we cannot expect others to do that for us!

  • Fred

Obama/ Kerry have proven themselves a treacherous duo. They raised the status of an murderous Iran to a respectable height & threatened Israel with dire consequences should it defend itself. No wonder the once mighty US is treated with derision by Arabs and Islamist are feeling free & encouraged to new exploits. Shame Obama/ Kerry.

You seem to have a serious editorial problem at Algemeiner and that is that you publish one article after another decrying the negotiations and agreement with Iran

But I have never seen in any of these articles a single alternative plan. Surely it is time that the Editor handed back these articles and said “OK – what is your alternative plan – You tell us what you want readers to reject, but you must also tell readers what you want them to support”

I don’t believe there is such a plan – I believe this entire nonsense indicates that the articles are more of a Republican attack on the Democrat Administration in the White House than articles that are actually about the difficult situation of nuclear weapons possession in the Middle East

So come on Elder of Zion – and whoever else – What is this Plan B you imply you have?

Because I don’t think it exists.

Frankly I think these articles without an alternative plan – are little more than an insult to the intelligence of Algemenier Jewish and non-Jewish (supposing there to be a difference) readership. Come on – what’s the plan

    • Elisheva

Julian, don’t you think there is a difference between Jews and non-Jews?
As for a plan, yes we (Israel) have one. We would implement it if we go rid of the US and International Court tying our hands. The US and ICC should support Israel, in their own interest too.

    • EJ

As if the alternatives to the insanity of granting Iran nuclear weapons and the alternatives haven’t been adequately explained again and again over the last decade. Fact is, it doesn’t matter what anyone says. Either you aren’t listening, you don’t want to hear or you actually want to see Israel destroyed. The latter is most likely the case. In abandoning Israel, America has sealed its fate, but that doesn’t matter either.

    • Marky mark

The author of this piece makes clear that at this point, there is no good alternative. Presumably he believes that going into the negotiations (when there was still an international coalition imposing sanctions), no deal (i.e., maintaining sanctions) would have been better than this bad deal.

      • EJ

Yes, Mark. Everyone knows that the author of this “piece” has repeatedly claimed that there is no good alternative. It is the cornerstone of his argument. You obviously hold the same position. Great minds think alike, don’t they? Perhaps you should consider running for President. You are obviously more than qualified.

Here is a little tip for you if you ever get the chance to negoiate for the future of civilisation as we know it. He who cares least, wins. You certainly don’t need a Havard education to conduct negotiations based on the premise that there is no alternative to your opponents position. But that isn’t what the “deal” with Iran is about anyway. Surely a smart guy like yourself must know that?

      • EJ

Sorry, Mark. I didn’t read your comments very well. Please except my apologies for misinterpreting your remarks and for jumping to false conclusions.

  • The Obama Administration’s deeply flawed Iranian nuclear agreement is nearly “veto-proof” unless the U.S. Senate can get enough votes to override a Presidential veto. What’s next–perhaps the U.S. normalizing relations with Iran? Indeed, daily prayer is sorely needed.

The lesson the Jewish people never seem to learn is that to survive they must utterly destroy their enemies. They didn’t do it with the Canaanites and they haven’t done it in any of the wars forced upon the Jewish people in the State of Israel. This may be hard for some of you to believe, but that is precisely what G-d wants them to do, to make Israel’s enemies the blood sacrifice instead of the Jews. If Israel will destroy Iran’s capacity to wage war it will be blessed by the Lord and by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

  • Robert.Weintraub

Obama is not the United States. He does not reflect American opinion which every poll shows to be strongly pro Israel.

Much of Israel’s difficulties with Obama lie in the attitude of American Jews. American Jews voted 78% for Obama the first time and 69% the second. . No other white ethnic group came even close. The Democratic Party gets a good deal of its money from Jews. Because Obama and the Democrats get this support both he and they feel free to beat up on Israel without worrying about alienating their American Jewish supporters.

Israel needs to get a little tougher with its American Jewish opponents. It could start with J Street.

    • Grace

all that Jews in America need to do is to go back. They have compromised with the gentile lifestyle until, theyv forgotten who they are and trully, american jews are no longer jews according to me till and untill they go back to their land. today they are not going back to the lands of the holocaust, they are going back to their land promised them by Hashem their God. Today, that land has a city (eternal) and has boundaries !! May their eyes be opened. if not that they will continue making blunders, comforming with the wicked west, and suffer till they say “blessed is he that cometh in the name of the lord” Bless the Olim.
