A new video circulating online shows eight American children reacting — mostly positively — to their first taste of the famed Israeli eggplant salad/dip, known in Hebrew as “salat hatzilim” and in other parts of the Levant as baba ganoush.

The clip, created by Cut.com, features the youngsters trying a variety of exotic dishes from other countries as well, such as Hawaiian poi, Colombian pork belly and Russian borscht.

The Israeli delicacies served include schnitzel, slices of pita, hummus and the baba ganoush salad.

“If someone had a name like that, they’d be so sad,” one boy says, mispronouncing it as “ba-ga-doosh.”

Israel Closes West Bank, Gaza Strip for Rosh Hashanah

The IDF announced on Tuesday that it will put in place a closure of the West Bank and Gaza Strip...

A few of the kids are able to correctly identify the servings on the plate and take a liking to the food, with one boy even giving two thumbs to the schnitzel. When told the food is from Israel, some share the little knowledge they have about the country.

“There’s a lot of Jewish people there,” says one girl. Another offers, “I hear that they have a war going on or something. Is that true?”

Watch the clip below to see their first experience with Israeli cuisine.

    Jerry Henderson? Nice Scandinavian name!
Or is that a Jewish Name?
    Your linguistic capabilities about
    “Eggplants” are very Impressive indeed.
    What kind of dictionary
did you have to use, Mini Brain?

  • Greg Kaplan

I agree with Scott Finkle 100%. In response to few of you who have lied AGAIN and accused him for telling the absolute truth. calling him ”Ahmad”, ”Outright Anti semite”, ”Heinrich”, ”Miserable” etc. As for you ”Scott Adler”, Mr Eggplant historian! where was it that the jews were eating Hummous, Baba Ghannoush? In Rassia? in Germany? Eastern europe? Where Mr. Gefilte fish? ???? You have been out of Middle East for thousands of years, and suddenly you come back and discover that you ate Hummous, Pita bread, Falafel, Baba Ghannoush and other foods from that region? You didn’t even know what it was, let alone what it meant (with those Arabic names) and suddenly you call it your own? And for all those who came from the arab countries…they had already stolen everything from Arab culture anyway, Including their Cuisine, and still can’t cook like the Arabs 🙂 Don’t kid yourselves, there is no Jewish food!!!!! As for me, For your information my father fought for the creation of the state of Israel, my mother was a nurse in the army, and I fought in ’67 and ’73 wars. No, I’m not ”Anti semite” nor a ”Self Hating Jew, as one so conveniently would be labeled these days for telling the truth. it’s people like me who has given you your suddenly found pride to revise history the way it suits you. I have been there, seen it and done it. telling the truth will set you free, and you won’t feel guilty for stealing. Give credit where it’s due, however insignificant it may be. It will help our image throughout the world, which we so badly need. We don’t need to create more resentments and haterate. TRUTH FOR A CHANGE ????? Ha?

Don’t lie to these kids too! There is no Israeli food, period. We’re very good at stealing other people’s land, culture and food, and then calling it Israeli.
I know we have no music to speak of (that’s why we love and listen to Arabic and Greek music) and no national food to call it our own Israeli food. Everything is stolen from the Arabs with atempted name changes, like “salat hatzilim” “Israeli salad” nationalizing the Falafel and Hummous etc. I guess if one lies too many times and repeats it over and over, even you yourself begin to believe it! Be brave tell it like it is and don’t lie!!!Let alone to the children!
There no shame in barrowing, but steeling?

    • Hebrew

Scott Finkel is a liar. My family is from the Middle East, from Hebron actually prior to expulsion by the Arabs. Our cuisine is and always has been Jewish and certainly dates back to time immemorial. Just because Arabs, Turks and others have similar food is irrelevant. Finkel is a liar and I bet an outright antisemite.

      • Elmo Glick

At the very least, he’s a far leftist, like Obama, Benny Sanders and Hillary Clinton. They lie all time, especially to Jews.

        • Louise Goodman

What do you mean, these people are far-leftist?
They are moderate, too moderate to stand up for what many democrats want.
Plus all 3 have totally different views on most issues than the others. You can’t put them in one bunch.
I am Jewish, very pro-Israel, have grown children there and lived in Israel myself a year.
          And I am for Sanders.
All the news I met in Israel were for Pres Bush then, but all the news I know in the USA , which ate a lot, are democrats, not republicans.
As for Obama, I admired, he has really seemsd not matter what he says, to have a bias for Palestinians and against jews.
But most American democrats I ever met ate pro Israel!
In Europe, that might be different. Many Europeans, who don’t know what they’re talking about, are pro palestinians. I don’t know why.
          But you are totally wrong.

      • Scott Adler

Right, Ahmed — Jews have been eating humus, and pita for thousands of years, long before the Arabs came screaming out of the desert. (Eggplants are related to the tomato, but originated in China. The Arabs may have brought them from India, but they also murdered eighty, that’s 8-0 million Indians along the way.) But then, Ahmed (or is it Heinrich?) what does truth mean if you really like to lie about stuff. And let’s not get started on the Middle East thing. You are out of your league.

      • Scott Adler

Hebrew — My comment appears to be linked to yours, rather than the miserable “Scott Finkel”. Sorry about that.

    • Zucker

Finkel. Don’t want to hurt your feelings ….but sorry : you are an ignoramus. Which means in english : ignorant.

    • Jerry Henderson

This is downright silly! It is HUMAN practice to adapt foods in the adjacent society/culture to suit your own tastes and needs. You do have to use the same name, either. Eggplant is not called “eggplant” in Spanish. Nor in Japanese. Nor in Russian. Nor in German. But I guess that some fool will try to say that is Obama’s fault, too. After all, he is a big bad dictatorial President who wants to suspend our Constitution and have a third term! The silliness I see in some of the comments on this and other sites is downright STOOPID! Scott, any food prepared in Israel and eaten by Israelis is Israeli food. If the same food is prepared by non-Israelis outside of Israel, it is Israeli-styled food. So whether you call it eggplant, aubergine, melongene, garden egg, brinjal, guinea squash or something else, it is all good! I know this concept may disturb your little brain, but there it is. Live with it!

You mean like they stole religion from the Jews and plagiarized the Torah, lifting entire stories and changing the names to Arabic ones? Gan Ayden became Jannah (in Egypt Gannah). Gehinom became Jahannam. Hebrew sayings and much else taken from Jews. Holy land place names in Arabic often a corruption of Hebrew ones.

Shall we accuse Italians of stealing pesto from Iranians because they made one first with pistachios? Get a grip.
