An Israeli civilian who tackled a knife-wielding terrorist outside a mall in Petah Tikva on Wednesday recounted the ordeal shortly afterwards in an interview with Israel’s Arutz 7 TV.

Renaddi Kasau described the events leading up to his efforts to halt the attacker, who succeeded in stabbing a 25-year-old Israeli man before he was subdued.

The terrorist — later identified as Tamer Yunis Ahmed Vareidat, 25, from Daheira, near Hebron — arrived at the Kenyon HaGadol mall by bus and immediately began attacking passersby with a knife.

Kasau recalled sitting on a bench at the bus stop and seeing Vareidat running in his direction and shouting, “Allahu akbar! Allahu akbar!”

Initially running away from the terrorist, Kasau said he decided to reverse course and chase him instead. As soon as he turned around he saw Vareidat plunging his knife into the victim. With the help of other bystanders, Kasau said he was able to neutralize the terrorist.

Despite the attacker’s weapon, Kasau said he was not afraid to pounce on him.

Asked why he pursued the terrorist instead of fleeing the scene, Kasau, an immigrant to Israel from Ethiopia, responded, “This is my country. I don’t have any other country to run to.”
