Jewish comedian Sarah Silverman said on Tuesday that she was dared on social media to poke fun at Jews, after tweeting something controversial about Jesus.

On Dec. 25, Silverman tweeted, “Merry Christmas! Jesus was gender fluid.” The post offended both conservative Christians and others who slammed Silverman for ridiculing Jesus, given her Jewish background, the New York Daily News reported. Among the above were those who accused her of not mocking her own people.

Silverman tweeted about the backlash on Tuesday, amazed that anyone would suggest she doesn’t joke about Jews on a regular basis: “The absolute best is when the (adorable) haters write ‘I’d like to see you make fun of Jews!’ Um, hi, have we met??”

Silverman at first said she prefers not to respond to “nonsense,” but then explained that her original post was written during a car ride with her boyfriend, and that she wanted to add on a word from the couple’s “collective new vocabulary.” She thinks the term “gender fluid” is “funny, beautiful, and true in that He is all of us.”
