JNS.org – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Israeli government ministers at Sunday’s cabinet meeting that talks with the United States on a new 10-year memorandum of understanding on security assistance are ongoing, but that a deal may not be reached until after President Barack Obama’s successor takes office next January.

“It’s not yet certain that we will reach an agreement,” Netanyahu said. “We are demanding an answer to Israel’s security needs and there are discussions. Either we will finish this with the current administration or we will need to reach an agreement with the next administration.”

Acting Israeli National Security Adviser Yaakov Nagel briefed the ministers on the strategic situation facing Israel in 2016. Nagel said that Israel is seeking around $5 billion in annual security aid from the US, up from the current total of around $3.1 billion.

it’s long past time to see the writing on the wall, and to wean israel off the american teat, because there no guarantee that the next president, or her advisors, will be any more supportive of israel.

by developing local suppliers to replace the $3 billion american aid package, israel would be creating thousands of well-paid jobs, and boosting the israeli economy. plus, it would enhance israel’s export trade in products other than oranges.

and it would also lift america’s veto over idf operations, which would be a good thing.
