Jewish 100, 2015: Marvin Hier – Community
by Algemeiner Staff
Marvin Hier
Dean and Founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center
Hier heads both the Simon Wiesenthal Center and its educational arm the Museum of Tolerance, which research and teach the Holocaust and hate in a historical and contemporary context; confront anti-semitism, hate and terrorism; promote human rights and dignity; and stand with Israel.
Unfortunately, recent events have kept him busy.
The leading human rights group exhorted social media giants such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter to ban postings “celebrating and encouraging the continuing wave of stabbings by Palestinians across Israel.” Meanwhile, the center has placed most of the blame for the current uptick in violence across Israel on the Palestinian Authority and its president, Mahmoud Abbas.
Hier’s organization also was among those which expressed outrage at an Arab proposal to the UN’s cultural arm that would strip Israel’s cultural and historical ties from the Western Wall plaza.
“Declaring the Western Wall a Palestinian site would be like turning over Mount Sinai to ISIS,” Rabbi Hier said at the time.
