Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations and a Palestinian envoy engaged in a shouting match on Monday during a meeting of the Security Council about the Middle East.

Ambassador Danny Danon Danon opened his remarks by saying, “The endless incitement and the ongoing glorification of violence” by the Palestinians “is directly responsible for the murder of innocent Israelis.”

He criticized the 15-nation Security Council for failing to condemn the current wave of Palestinian terrorism against Israelis, and then turned to permanent Palestinian UN observer Riyad Mansour. “Are you ready right now to denounce terror against innocent Israelis?” he asked.

When Mansour refused to comply, Danon shouted, “Shame on you! Instead of denouncing terror, you are encouraging it! You’re paying the families of the terrorists.”

“Do you do the same?” Mansour responded, to which Danon replied, “You glorify terrorism. Shame on you for doing that.”

“We don’t do that. Shame on you for killing thousands of Palestinian children,” Mansour said, before Chinese Ambassador Liu Jieyi, president of the council this month, called on the two envoys to maintain order.

Following the meeting, Danon took to Twitter to reiterate what he had told Mansour.

“To [the] Palestinian representative: Shame on you for not condemning terror, we condemn all acts terrorism. Shame on you for not being able to say it,” he wrote. “In our region silence kills. It’s time for the Palestinian leadership to end their silence & to start acting as leaders.”

Danon and the non-profit organization One Family hosted Natan and Renana Meir, the widower and daughter of Dafna Meir — who was stabbed to death at her Otniel home by a Palestinian terrorist — at the Security Council meeting on Monday. Father and daughter said, “It is difficult to express in words the deep pain and unbearable longing. This sense of loss breaks our heart and our soul.  With broken hearts we ask the international community for help.  We hear those who say that terror is a result of frustration, and we ask – is there anything more frustrating than what we have endured?”

In his own speech before the Security Council, Danon recounted the story of Dafna’s murder at the hands of a 15-year-old Palestinian. Dafna fought with her attacker and saved three of her children, who were home at the time. The terrorist later claimed he had been inspired to kill by video clips and other content inciting to violence that he had seen on Palestinian Authority TV and social media.

“Natan and Renana are here with us in this chamber sitting behind me,” said Danon. “The Palestinian culture of hate and constant brainwashing is responsible for the loss of too many Israelis. And it is directly responsible for the murder of Dafna Meir.”

The Security Council meeting took place the same day as a bus explosion in Jerusalem, later confirmed as a terrorist attack, in which at least 21 people were wounded, two of them critically.
