When Alain Benhamou walked into his apartment near Paris in July 2015 and saw the words “dirty Jew” scrawled on the wall, he knew it was time to leave.

    Just to note, the word ‘suburb’ or banlieue in French denotes the heavily Muslim areas as opposed to central Paris which is very prestigious. It’s the opposite of the American urban pattern where the middle clases have moved to the suburbs and the ‘down town’ areas are often poor and dangerous. On the 14 or 15 visits to France I got the impression that anti-Jewish behaviour was caused mainly by Muslim young men.
