A number of recent defections has Hamas in a panic, London-based pan-Arab news outlet Al Asharq al Awsat reported on Wednesday.

According to the report — first highlighted in English by pro-Israel blogger Elder of Ziyon  and quoted by the Palestine Press Agency — because there is no apparent link among the defectors – all of whom have absconded from Gaza to Israel and are sharing key information with Israeli security forces – it is proving difficult for the terrorist organization’s leadership to decipher a pattern and put a stop to the phenomenon.

As was reported in The Algemeiner last week, a senior member of Hamas – Bassam Mahmoud Baraka, from Khan Yunis – told his family he was going on an errand, and then turned up at the Gaza-Israel border, with his laptop in tow, and surrendered himself to the IDF. The Red Cross subsequently informed his family that he was in Israel.

Baraka, it was reported, is privy to significant details about how Hamas builds its terror tunnels, whose purpose is to conduct cross-border raids to kidnap and kill Israelis. So, too, are the three or four other high-ranking members of the terrorist organization who escaped to the Jewish state.

As a result, according to Al Asharq al Awsat, the Hamas leadership has instituted new rules to keep critical personnel away from the Israeli border.

Details of tunnel construction have also been revealed by Hamas operatives captured by Israel over the course of the year. In May, for example, a 17-year-old member of Hamas’ “military wing” who crossed the border into Israel, was apprehended and interrogated by the IDF, the Shin Bet and Israel Police. He revealed a wealth of information about the tunnels – including the fact that some of them contain showers, toilets, kitchens – and even rest and recreation facilities — to enable the diggers and terrorists planning massive attacks against Israel to remain underground for extensive periods of time.

In April, it was reported that Hamas was using more than 1,000 operatives to dig the tunnels – using smuggled building material and excavation machinery – and paying each a salary of $300-$400 per month. Meanwhile, as was reported by Israel Radio at the time, Hamas’s elite terror unit, Nukhbah, was conducting simulations of attacks on Israelis through the tunnels, many of which collapsed during the winter, possibly as a result of heavy rain. Several Hamas operatives have been killed in the tunnel collapses, for which Israel has denied responsibility.

Hamas operatives may have begun to read the writing on the walls: Hamas has led Gaza’s Arabs into a dead end, and helping Israel put an end to Hamas’ control is the only way out for their extended families.

  • Guetta

Good for Israel they will be good assets on the war against these animals of Hamas

I’m guessing our intelligence in Israel knows whether these “defectors” are helpful or harmful. That they left their families behind is what makes this suspicious…..they may hope to convey disinformation, and enjoy Israeli hospitality all the while. Like I said, I trust Israeli intelligence to know what to do.

  • RMoby

It is surprising to me that this is newsy. I would think that the Israeli military already knows the precise location of the tunnels given their advanced technology capabilities. I may be mistaken, but that does not seem to be rocket science.

  • DockyWocky

Could this be a sign that some Palestinians want to end the Intifada? But this has probably occurred before, so might mean nothing has changed.

  • Shalom

So, did anyone bother to ask why this is happening? Seems a little strange. . .

  • I am so glad those terrorists are helping Israel. God is doing mighty MIGHTY things! I hope and pray for their sake that the UK votes LEAVE today. Donald Trump will be in Scotland Friday – and in Israel inside 3 weeks. Trump is a great GREAT man sent by HaShem.

    Be afraid. Very afraid

I suspect that Israel has a standing offer known to some that they will be paid by Israel for information like this. Ever since the Phoenicians invented money, there has always been a better way of saying “Thank you.” I doubt these defectors are as altruistic as the article would have you believe, but, I m glad that it is happening.
When there was my own time in Vietnam, we all knew the soldiers prayer.
    A Prayer for Soldiers

Brave warriors should find us in battle, May our cause be just. May our leaders have a clear vision. May our courage, not falter. May we be triumphant and earn a victory as we show mercy to our enemies.

May our efforts bring lasting peace. May our sacrifice be always appreciated by those we serve. May we return to our loved ones unharmed. Should we be harmed, may our wounds heal. Should we perish in the struggle, may God embrace us and find for us a place in His Kingdom.

The main thing, that as we pray for strength and fairness, we especially pray for peace. Maybe the enemy is beginning to agree.

  • The cancer of Islam is infecting Hamas as well. If you breed hate and terror you will reap hate and terror. We need Arabs to stand together to destroy the terror of Islam. As long as they do not they will get the results of that terror and hate. If they say nothing and do nothing they are part of the problem. Arabs bear responsibility for the actions of the haters in their midst and many of then are teaching children to hate.

For a change I am please with these news. In the same time I hope these individuals who fled to Israel weren’t sent by Hamas.

    • Markus Elkana Brajtman

This is what I thought of immediately the news broke that senior operatives left Gaza to deliver false info
Also, to make Israel afraid that Hamas has sophisticated tunnel equipment.

How did Hamas get this equipment?
Obviously, using money meant to rebuild Gaza.
Where did the money come from?
      Donation from USA and others.
Israel has warned them to stop sending money to the terrorists.
      And who is responsible?
      Chris Gunnes.

He knows where the money is going, and has not tried to stop this theft of donated money.
Guness is the war criminal who should be tried at the ICC

Praise God, oh give thanks to the Lord for he is good, Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed out if the hand of the enemy..Psalms 107…. Our true fight is against the enemy which is not flesh, continue to pray, watch and pray and you will see greater things than these….Shalom….Peace

  • brenrod

so why does Israel let anything in, let them all starve and beg to disarm in order to eat.

    • Markus Elkana Brajtman

I agree with what you wrote.
This is something that I and hundreds of others have said.
But those liars will claim that Israel is starving them.
      So, let them starve.
No food, no water, no electricity
Once the Gazans suffer from the need to stop Hamas, they will revolt against Hamas, which could lead to the end of Hamas.

      • Sounds reasonable to me. However, any practical advantage or emotional satisfaction would be completely extirpated by the humiliation of watching the EU (what’s left after we began deserting the sinking ship), the US,UN etc. airlifting supplies into Gaza. Do you really want to be cast as the USSR in a rerun of the Berlin blockade, or Assad in Syria, or ISIS in Iraq ? No fun left.

    • Hilltop Watchman

Won’t make any difference. Ahmad parasites will eat while the people are left to starve for the world’s media to plaster all over our TV, radio and newspapers. Time to collapse the tunnels using underground explosive charges and then flooding them with waste water and bright IV glowing dye.

      • Yale

My approach would be for Israel to construct its own tunnel(s) that would ultimately connect Hamas’ tunnel system directly to the Mediterranean, and then let nature take care of the problem.

    • Hilltop Watchman

      I meant HAMAS parasites

  • Lia

    Good news for Israel.

  • Jay Lavine

This is why you don’t want to condemn, antagonize, humiliate, or punish Arabs as a whole for the actions of a few, as some hatemongers whose Judaism-deficient brains have become possessed by right-wing ideology habitually do. As for those who are evil, they always retain the ability to make teshuva. As Bruriah counseled Rav Meir, pray not for the death of your enemy but rather that he will repent and change his ways. The biggest victory of all is making a friend out of an enemy.

“Bassam Mahmoud Baraka, from Khan Yunis – told his family he was going on an errand, and then turned up at the Gaza-Israel border…”

Mr Baraka left his family behind. Given how Hamas operates what does that tell us about his motives and his character?

Best Wishes to Israel from France

    • Doug1943

Common sense, and in keeping with the high ethical and moral standard for which Jews are justly famous. And at the same time — keep your powder dry.

    • Yale

I’d love to know what has happened to his family since.

  • We Jews must THANK G_D for this anti-terrorist
victory that He he gave to us.

PLEASE Help SUE the terrorists in court:
