Tel Aviv terrorist receives two life sentences

Raed Khalil, who stabbed two to death in Tel Aviv last November, received two life sentences and an additional 20 years; earlier in the day, another terrorist, who attempted to stab a man to death outside a shopping mall in Petah Tikva, was condemned to 16.5 years; state prosecutor: Petah Tikva terrorists 'tried to harm Jews because they were Jews.'

The terrorist who stabbed to death two Israelis in November last year received two life sentences and an additional 20 years Monday from the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court, while second terrorist, who attempted to stab to death a man outside the Ofer shopping mall in Petah Tikva, was sentenced to 16.5 years.

Speaking shortly after the sentence had been handed down, Reuven’s brother, Alex, said that he believed it to be just. “We have waited for this moment for a year and in my opinion, the judges gave him what he deserved. The murderer, according to the requests made by the family, should not leave prison or see the light of day or his family,” he said. “It is my understanding that according to new laws he will not be released. He killed Jews and his place is in prison for his entire life.”

According to the indictment, Khalil took a 23cm-long knife from a kebab restaurant nearby and from there went to carry out the murderous attack.

After taking the knife from the restaurant, which he put in his coat pocket, Khalil went up to the second floor of the Panorama building looking for Jews. On exiting the lift he saw Aviram and attacked him, stabbing him several times. Managing to escape to a synagogue, Aviram, screamed "terrorist" before collapsing and ultimately succumbing to his wounds. His second victim, Yisayev, was stabbed nine times.

Earlier in the day another terrorist was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 16.5 years in prison for carrying out a stabbing attack in which one man was wounded in October 2015 outside the Ofer shopping mall in Petah Tikva.

The terrorist, 25, was sentenced by the Lod Magistrate’s Court which also ordered him to pay 100,000 shekels in compensation to his victim.

The convicted terrorist, from the city of ad-Dhahiriyain Hebron, was indicted last March after admitting his guilt as part of a plea bargain in which the state requested that he be sentenced to 17 years in prison and be ordered to pay a financial penalty.

Staying in a shop Kafr Qasim in Israel without permission at the time of the attack, he decided to carry out an attack shortly before writing a letter to his parents entitled ‘al-Aqsa you are not alone’ in which he stated his desire to become a martyr.

When he arrived at Petah Tikva, he searched for his victim. Before choosing a passerby at random, he yelled “allahu akbar” and “al-Aqsa” before attacking and stabbing him. The victim resisted his attacker who attempted to flee before eventually being overpowered by more passersby and arrested.

Commenting on the sentence, the state prosecutor said: “During the wave of terror stabbing attacks in the latter half of 2015, the indicted individual carried out a stabbing attack in Petah Tikva out of a desire to harm Jews because they are Jews.”

The terrorists actions were carried out in an extremely violent and cruel fashion, the prosecutor continued, “using a weapon motivated by nationalism and racism. Only because of the fight put up by the victim and the actions of those passing by did the attack not result in death.”
