Jewish actor Andrew Garfield said he prepared for his latest theater role by watching back-to-back episodes of a popular reality television show about drag queens, E! News reported on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old British-American — who plays a character struggling with his Jewish faith and homosexuality in the production of Tony Kushner’s 1993 play “Angels in America” stated during a recent panel discussion, “Every Sunday I would have eight friends over and we would just watch ‘Ru,’ I mean every single series of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race.’ I mean every series.”

“This is my life outside of this play,” he joked. “I am a gay man right now just without the physical act — that’s all.”

“Angels in America” is about the AIDS crisis and homosexuality in America in the 1980s. It is currently showing at the National Theatre in London and Garfield plays Prior Walter, a young New Yorker who is diagnosed with AIDS.
