Jewish Actor Andrew Garfield Says He Watched Popular Drag Series to Prepare for Latest Theater Role
Jewish actor Andrew Garfield said he prepared for his latest theater role by watching back-to-back episodes of a popular reality television show about drag queens, E! News reported on Wednesday.
The 33-year-old British-American — who plays a character struggling with his Jewish faith and homosexuality in the production of Tony Kushner’s 1993 play “Angels in America” — stated during a recent panel discussion, “Every Sunday I would have eight friends over and we would just watch ‘Ru,’ I mean every single series of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race.’ I mean every series.”
“This is my life outside of this play,” he joked. “I am a gay man right now just without the physical act — that’s all.”
“Angels in America” is about the AIDS crisis and homosexuality in America in the 1980s. It is currently showing at the National Theatre in London and Garfield plays Prior Walter, a young New Yorker who is diagnosed with AIDS.
