Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon warned members of the Security Council on Tuesday that time was running out on the nuclear deal with Iran and they were now facing “the last chance to correct the mistakes of the past and recognize that we all must set off on a new path.”
US President Donald Trump has set a May deadline for reforms of the JCPOA, which lifts sanctions on the Tehran regime in exchange for an Iranian pledge to halt its nuclear weapons program. European countries have resisted the changes demanded by Trump.
If reforms are not made by Trump’s deadline, the president has stated that he will no longer waive sanctions placed on Iran.
The money Iran has received through the lifting of sanctions, critics of the deal claim, is going to sponsoring terrorism, constructing ballistic missiles, and other aggressive actions.
Israel opposes the nuclear deal, which it sees as appeasement. It also believes Iran will eventually violate the agreement or wait until it expires and then race to the bomb.
“We are now at a critical juncture,” Danon told the Security Council. “It is the last chance to correct the mistakes of the past and recognize that we all must set off on a new path aimed at reining in Iran’s reckless behavior.”
“To the permanent members of this Council I have a simple message: do not miss this opportunity,” he continued. “In 45 days the clock will run out and the rules of the game will change. You now have a choice to make. Either choose to work with the Americans and support their genuine efforts to make the Middle East a safer place — or choose Iran and enable a dangerous regime. I urge you to make the right choice.”
