Actress and singer Selena Gomez wore a gown to the MET Gala on Monday inspired by the Bible’s Queen Esther.

The songstress attend the event — whose theme this year was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” — wearing a custom-designed Coach slip gown and told Vogue about her look, “I wanted it to capture Queen Esther. I admire her strength and I think that’s what I wanted it to feel like.”

Gomez personalized the look even more by having her favorite quote from scripture, “A woman who fears the lord is a woman who shall be praised,” carved in handwriting on both her bag and a ribbon sewn into her gown.

Another Jewish-inspired look at the MET Gala was worn by the original Wonder Woman, actress Lynda Carter. The 66-year-old, who played the superhero in the 1970s, wore a custom Zac Posen gown along with a gold crown that had on the front the Hebrew words “leolam al tishcechi,” which in English translates to “never forget.” In the back of her hair was a Star of David barrette. Carter also carried a bag designed by the iconic Holocaust survivor Judith Lieber.

Among the Jewish attendees of the event who stayed true to their religion was television and film producer Fabiola Beracasa Beckman, who said she refused to wear a cross to the gala “cause I thought that might be crossing the line — no pun intended.”
