Israel to Cut Gas, Fuel Supplies to Gaza in Response to Arson Terror
by Benjamin Kerstein
Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman is intensifying pressure on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip by cutting off gas and fuel supplies as a response to ongoing attacks by arson kites and balloons from the coastal enclave, Israeli media reported on Wednesday.
According to Channel 2, the new restrictions will take effect on Thursday and last indefinitely.
Israel has been subjected to months of so-called “kite terrorism,” in which balloons and kites fitted with incendiary devices have been flown across the border to attack Israeli civilian targets. While no one has been killed or injured in the resulting fires, they have caused millions of shekels in damage.
Channel 2 estimates that the amount stands at approximately 30 million shekels, with over 12 million shekels in damage claims already made. Some 7,400 acres of land has been burned.
