Dozens of rockets — at least 70 — were fired by Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip into southern Israel on Wednesday night, as the long-simmering tensions on the Jewish state’s southern border heated up yet again.

Three Israelis were reported wounded in a rocket attack on the southern city of Sderot.

According to the Israeli military, at least 11 rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system, while a majority of the remaining rockets hit open areas.

Residents of Israeli communities near the Gaza border were instructed on Wednesday night to remain near protected spaces.

In response to the rocket fire, the Israeli Air Force bombed 12 Hamas targets in Gaza. At least six Palestinians were reported injured by the Hamas-run health ministry.

The latest flare-up in the south came as negotiations over a long-term ceasefire —  mediated by the UN and Egypt — continued.

Earlier on Wednesday, before the rocket fire, a Hamas official said these negotiations were in “advanced stages.”
