Wednesday night was full of tension for the residents of southern Israel as rockets fired from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip rained down on them.

A young Israeli boy, Shalev Levy, whose father Avi was wounded by shrapnel after a rocket struck their home, recalled, “I was in my room playing when suddenly there was a Red Alert siren. My father said to go in the bomb shelter and not leave it, so I stayed and he came.”

“When the alert was over he left the bomb shelter but I stayed inside,” Levy continued. “After a few seconds, there was another siren and then I heard a ‘boom.'”

“When I walked out to check what happened, I saw that my sister’s room was full of smoke and fire,” he said.

“I moved towards the living room and my dad shouted to me, ‘Get out of the house quickly,'” Levy explained. “I saw there was a lot of blood coming from his arm. We hurried outside and he told me to find something to stop the bleeding. I found a rag on the floor and tied his arm with it, and asked neighbors to come help.”

Over the past 24 hours, Hamas has launched over 180 rockets into southern Israel — including toward the city of Beersheba, where sirens sounded for the first time since 2014.

Around 30 rockets have been intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system.

At least seven Israelis were wounded in the rocket attacks, and many more were treated for shock symptoms. Damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure was also reported.

In response to the rocket fire, the Israeli military has struck more than 150 Hamas targets in Gaza.
