Viral Video Star Uses Shofar for Rendition of Missy Elliot Song on ‘Ellen DeGeneres Show’

A woman who became famous after a video of her performing a popular Missy Elliott rap song went viral over the summer used a shofar when she did the same performance on Thursday’s episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”
Mary Halsey rose to fame with a video of her performing Elliott’s “Work It” at a barbecue in Rhode Island. The clip circulated on social media and even reached Elliot herself, who last month reposted it on Twitter. The rapper called Halsey her “funky white sister” and commented in a tweet that Halsey “straight killed ‘Work It’ sound effects and all. I love it.”
Halsey stopped by the “Ellen” show to talk about the video and do a performance of “Work It” with the help of a shofar, which is traditionally blown on Rosh Hashanah. DeGeneres then surprised Halsey by having Elliot appear on stage so the two could perform the hit song together.
Halsey explained that she first sang “Work It” in 2003 for a contest. She told DeGeneres that she spent a long time studying the lyrics to the rap song and when she saw that people enjoyed her first performance, she continued to perform the song over the years.
