A planned meeting between Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was canceled over Israeli pressure, according to media reports on Thursday.

The sit-down was supposed to take place on Jan. 15, but has not been has now been indefinitely postponed.

According to Hebrew news site Mako, the cancellation was the result of a request from Israel.

The West Bank-based Palestinian Authority also strongly objected to Haniyeh’s Moscow visit, particularly after the recent departure of its forces from the Rafah crossing on the Egypt-Gaza Strip border.
