A man accused and convicted of collaborating with Israel was sentenced to death by hanging by a military court in Gaza on Sunday, according to Ma’an News Agency.
The accused has been imprisoned since Aug. 11, 2011.
Hamas announced a crack down on collaboration with Israel earlier in March. As part of the push, the terrorist organization urged alleged “collaborators” with Israel to turn themselves in as a means of being granted leniency.
“We announce the opening of the door to repentance for remaining collaborators and for all those who have fallen into the traps set by the enemy’s intelligence services,” interior ministry spokesman Islam Shahwan told reporters on March 12.
“We urge them to return to the bosom of their people and their families,” he said, noting that the offer of clemency was open until April 11.
Gaza courts have handed out over 30 death sentences since 2007, many of them to people convicted of helping Israeli security forces.
