The Syrian government and opposition rebel forces are blaming each other after a synagogue near Damascus went up in flames, Israel Radio is reporting.

The rebels said that government forces burned the synagogue after stripping it of its contents. The rebels condemned the act, saying they oppose all acts of aggression against holy sites.

The Assad regime, however, faulted the rebels. A news site associated with President Bashar al-Assad’s regime posted video to the internet of the interior of the synagogue after what it says was a ransacking by rebel forces.

This isn’t the first time reports that the 2,000 year-old synagogue was damaged in fighting have appeared. Several weeks ago video was posted online that showed that the Eliahou Hanabi synagogue, allegedly built by the Biblical prophet Elisha, had sustained severe structural damage due to shelling.
