Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel
Since becoming the Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Israel in 2003, Metzger has been a vital proponent of bringing together divergent communities. As the representative of Jews of European origins now living in Israel, in 2012 he traveled to Germany in order to persuade lawmakers there to overturn a ban on ritual circumcision. The ban was revoked months later.
