Jonathan Sacks
Commonwealth Chief Rabbi
As the Commonwealth Chief Rabbi since 1991, Jonathan Sacks has been the voice of British Jewry for 22 years. Eloquent and articulate, he’s shown he’s as comfortable quoting Socrates as he is scripture. A stabilizing force amongst the disparate Jewish sects in the country, he announced he’ll retire at the end of the year. A recent trip to Israel proved that he’s still as much an advocate as ever for the Jewish tradition and faith. Giving a lecture on anti-Semitism, the rabbi warned of the increasing threat to the Jewish community. “How do we persuade the non-Jewish world to see anti-Semitism not just as a Jewish problem, but as their problem?” he asked, adding, “a civilization or a country that has no room for Jews has no room for humanity.”
