Comedian Conan O’Brien who headlined the White House Correspondents Association dinner Saturday night, made sure to include a couple of Jewish themed jokes.
“House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is here, or as I like to refer to him: yet another Jewish Republican from the South,” said O’Brien as Cantor was seen chuckling in his seat.
“That reminds me,” O’Brien continued “also joining us is a congressman from New York named Steve Israel, that’s right, he’s from New York and his name is Israel, now there is pandering and then there’s pandering. That is like having a congressman from South Carolina named Jesus H. Gun.”
O’Brien also poked fun at the Qatar based Al-Jazeera news network. “Before dinner” he said, “I had a chance to mingle, you probably saw me, I worked the crowd, I shook some hands and sold my Twitter count to Al-Jazeera for $500 million, they’ll buy anything.”
Other targets of the comedian’s routine included President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, the NRA, Chris Christie and C-SPAN.
O’Brien’s speech followed a self depreciating comic routine from President Obama who also paid tribute to the victims of the recent Boston terror attack.
The White House Correspondents Association represents journalists who cover the White House and advocates on their behalf for greater access to the administration as well as more favorable work conditions, including most recently, special accommodations for breastfeeding mothers among the White House press corps.
