The chairman of UK football club Tottenham Hotspur has become a high-profile victim of anti-Semitic attacks on Twitter, the Jewish Chronicle reported Wednesday.
Daniel Levy, who heads the English soccer club, was the target of several anti-Semitic tweets by fans apparently unhappy with the potential transfer of Wales international Gareth Bale from Levy’s London club to Spain’s Real Madrid.
Some of the Tweets, retrieved by the Jewish Chronicle, included one from Richard Campbell, a tweeter using the handle @rycardcampbell: “Daniel Levy is a greedy Jewish c**t. He should’ve bit Real Madrid’s hands off when they offered £85 million for that diving monkey Bale.”
Another came from a Sheffield-based tweeter using the handle @TomHandleyy, who posted: “Daniel Levy is Jewish as f**k with transfers #PennyPincher.”
The attacks comes in light of a tough year for the club and its fans because of anti-Semitism.
In November, five fans of the club were injured at a bar in Rome in what witnesses said was an attack with anti-Semitic undertones. Later the same month, the Football Association, England’s governing body for the sport, launched an investigation into reports of anti-Semitic chants by West Ham fans during a game between their club and Tottenham.
Tottenham is an historically Jewish neighborhood and as such the team has gained a reputation as having a large Jewish fan base.
