Two soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces were injured by shrapnel from a mortar shell fired from Syria along the Israeli border, in the northern Golan Heights, Israeli media reported Wednesday.

The soldiers, who were members of the Nahal Infantry Brigade, were treated in the field by medics, the reports said.

“At this point I can confirm that there was fire from Syria that hit the Golan Heights, and I can also confirm that two soldiers were lightly injured,” an IDF spokesperson told The Algemeiner.

A senior army source told The Jerusalem Post it was too soon to know if the IDF was deliberately targeted.

While there have been several instances in the past of mortar fire falling in the Golan, this marks the first time that the Syrian civil war has resulted in Israeli injuries.
