An air raid on Hezbollah positions along the Lebanon-Syria border, allegedly carried out by Israel earlier this week, targeted two well-known weapons smuggling routes, Israel’s Channel 10 reported on Tuesday.
Two cities affected by the strikes, Nabi Shayth and Al Zabadani are both strongholds of the Shiite terrorist group, which is helping the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad battle a three-year rebellion.
Hezbollah operatives were seeking to take advantage of heavy cloud cover due to inclement weather to smuggle missiles across the border, according to Channel 10. They were transported in separate convoys consisting of several trucks each that diverged near the Lebanese border in order to decrease the chances of being identified, though they were still discovered.
The Israel Defense Force has declined to officially comment on the airstrike. However, an Israeli security source confirmed to Reuters that there has been “unusually intense air force activity in the north,” referring to Lebanon.
Israeli officials have repeatedly warned in recent months that the country will not tolerate the transfer of advanced weapons from Syria to Hezbollah and will act to prevent any such action.
