The Obama administration’s penchant for predicting various woes that it says may befall Israel if a Palestinian state is not established is reminiscent of the famed Godfather movies, Algemeiner Editor Dovid Efune said on Monday in an interview on Real News TV.
“The way that they are talking to Israel is as if they are Don Corleone here, it’s a mafia style, its like, ‘We would hate for something terrible to happen to that nice little Jewish state you’ve got going on there,'” Efune said. “It’s like, look, ‘This is how we think things should go, but if they don’t, you are going to get violence, you are going to be accused of apartheid, you are going to get diplomatic isolation.”
In reality, he asserted, the threats don’t really exist.
“It’s an artificial threat that is being created by the administration to push the Israelis to the point where they have to make concessions,” he said.
Efune added, “There is absolutely no question that Kerry’s comments are part of a wider tone and trend that we have seen coming from the administration, and similar comments were made by the president himself in a recent interview with Jeffrey Goldberg at Bloomberg View.”
Days earlier, Kerry ignited a firestorm after it was reported that he used the term “apartheid” in reference to Israel.
Discussing failing Israeli peace talks with the Palestinian Authority, he told a group of international high-ranking officials, known as the Trilateral Commission, that, “A two-state solution will be clearly underscored as the only real alternative. Because a unitary state winds up either being an apartheid state with second-class citizens, or it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state.”
Responding to Kerry’s remarks, Efune said, “What is really most troubling and damaging specifically about the use of the term apartheid is that it’s a term that is brandied about by some really, really bad people.”
“If you follow that thought all the way through, it’s a position that says that there is no Jewish right to self-determination and there cannot be a situation where Jews have a state of their own. So what Kerry has effectively done is aligned himself with people who are bigots, who are racists, who are anti-Semitic, by using a similar term in his reference to the situation there in Israel.”
