As Israel frantically searched for three abducted teens, Amina Abbas, the wife of Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas underwent treatment in a Tel Aviv hospital, according to a just-released report.
Abbas was hospitalized on the seventh floor of the orthopedic neuro-surgery department at the private Assuta Medical Center last Thursday, reportedly for minor foot surgery, according to Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot. She was released on Sunday.
Abbas’ wife was under heavy guard, the report said, and Israeli officials have, so far, refused to discuss the case.
“Assuta does not disclose information about who is hospitalized or being treated at its facility, out of concern for patient privacy, and as a result, can neither confirm or deny any details relating to the patient,” a hospital official said.
Israeli Knesset Member Ayelet Shaked (The Jewish Home) said the report demonstrated the diametrically opposite value systems of Israeli and Palestinian societies.
“This is precisely the difference between us: there are those who hand out candy when they kidnap children, and there are those who [medically] treat the enemy,” Shaked said.
In November of 2013, Israeli doctors treated the infant granddaughter of Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, who was transferred to a hospital in Israel for medical treatment, her father wrote on Facebook.
“Dear brothers, Amal has been transferred inside the Green line,” Abdel Salam, Haniyeh’s oldest son, wrote. “I pray to Allah for her recovery.”
According to the reports, the one-year-old Amal was in serious condition after being diagnosed with a digestive system infection.
The infant died after being returned to a hospital in Gaza.
There was no word who covered the cost of treatment, but Israel commonly foots the bill for the thousands of Palestinians being treated in the country.
