Jordanian Foreign Minister, Nasser Judeh, may have succeeded in heading off a disaster at the gates of the Israeli Embassy in Amman, on Wednesday night, Israeli daily Ma’ariv reported.
Hundreds of screaming rioters attempted to break into the compound, in a protest against Israel’s three-day-old Operation Protective Edge against rocket fire from Gaza into the Jewish State.
“No To A Zionist Embassy on Jordanian Soil,” read signs held by the protesters, according to Ma’ariv.
“End diplomatic ties with the Zionist entity for it’s deeds against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip,” rioters demanded, according to the report.
Judeh arrived at the scene and confronted the rioters, who had already clashed with police and security forces. Authorities held the rioters at bay some 200 meters from the structure, the report said.
“Your message has been passed on,” Judeh told the protesters, in a bid to calm tensions.
Officials allowed the protest to continue about a kilometer away.
