Joy was diluted with grief in Israel’s Ethiopian immigrant community on Thursday.
Baynesain (Danny) Kasahun, who was killed last week in a terror attack near Kibbutz Nir Am, alongside Gaza, left behind a pregnant wife and three kids.
On Thursday morning, his widow, Gileto gave birth to a girl, Tal-Ohr, at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba.
“He was so looking forward to this moment,” she told Israel’s Walla News.
“It was sad that Danny wasn’t here with me,” she said. “It’s so hard; the birth was easy, but it’s so hard that he wasn’t here. Every day is another day he’s not here,” she said in grief.
“He knew we were going to have a daughter; there was no one to call, no one to message; it makes it all so much harder,” she reflected.
Master Sgt. Kasahun, 39 at his death, lived with his wife and three children in the struggling desert town of Netivot, close to southern Gaza. He was a professional soldier and a tracker with his unit. Gileto works as a kindergarten teacher’s assistant.
She said he knew the dangers of his role, but added that he loved his work.
“He’d rise at 04:00 am, in order to ‘open the path,'” army slang for sweeping a sector for threats.
“Therefore I decided to name our daughter ‘Tal-Ohr’ (morning dew), because of the hour he’d leave the house, and because he died in the morning,” she said, simply.
A family friend said “Danny was worried about the tunnels” that stretched from Gaza deep within Israel. “They’re walking underneath us,” he’d caution.
“He was a modest, quiet man,” in the words of one family member. “A kind of guy who helped everyone; anyone who needed a hand, he’d help him, and with a smile for all. A good man with a big heart.”
