The Islamic State has announced the establishment of what it called the “Sinai Caliphate” in the peninsula in a statement reported on the Saffad.com website.
The organization defined its mission as “destroying all the Egyptian military facilities and bases all over the Sinai and destroying the soldiers.”
But Israel, too, also received special attention, with the organization’s focus on the Red Sea port and tourist city of Eilat, according to the report.
Despite denials by Egyptian officials, some sources said that there are 4-to 5,000 militants already infiltrated within the Sinai Peninsula.
Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis, Egypt’s most active militant group, has sworn allegiance to Islamic State, a statement from Ansar said Monday night.
Ansar had previously told Reuters that it sought inspiration and advice from Islamic State, the radical Al-Qaeda offshoot that has taken over swathes of Iraq and Syria, drawing US-led airstrikes as it tries to remake the map of the Middle East.
“After entrusting God we decided to swear allegiance to the emir of the faithful Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, caliph of the Muslims in Syria and Iraq and in other countries,” the statement said.
