In the wake of allegedly unmasking a Mossad mole who posed as an aide to Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah, the Lebanon-based terrorist group is trying to limit exposure of their operations abroad, Israel’s NRG News said Wednesday.
Israel holds the Iranian-backed Shiite group responsible for a string of terror bombings against Israeli and Jewish targets in several countries, including, in 2012 alone against Israeli tourists in Burgas, Bulgaria, and embassy personnel in India, and in Georgia.
Senior sources within Hezbollah told Kuwait’s Al-Rai newspaper that, following the exposure of the “Zionist agent,” known as “M.Sh,” the group opted to disband Unit 901, responsible for operations in several countries, and disperse its agents.
Senior Hezbollah officials interrogated agents who might have had contact with the putative Mossad agent, and several were dismissed.
M.Sh reportedly belonged to one of the most respected families in southern Lebanon, who were aware of his activities as part of the Israeli intelligence organization.
According to the report, “M.Sh” managed to infiltrate senior positions in Hezbollah and was responsible for foreign activity and internal issues of the Shiite organization.
The agent, apparently, was trusted by the terror group’s leadership, including Nasrallah, and was partly responsible for the sheikh’s physical safety.
According to the report, which appeared Tuesday, the double agent was able to prevent revenge attacks over the assassination of secretive senior operative, Imad Mughniyeh, in a massive car bombing in Feb. 2008.
While Hezbollah held Israel responsible for the bombing, government officials in Jerusalem had no comment on the charge, and foreign analysts said many governments would have liked to see Mughniyeh dead.
The Lebanese agent may also have played a part in the assassination of another senior Hezbollah official, Hassan Haidar Ali, in charge of military procurement.
Haidar Ali was killed in in Dec. 2012 when a listening device he was trying to disable blew up.
“With pride, the Islamic Resistance announces the death of the hero Hassan Haidar Ali, a native of the town of Ansariyeh in southern Lebanon,” the group said in a statement.
Haidar Ali was killed when the “the Israeli enemy blew it up remotely, killing a civilian who was in the area.”
The exposure of the alleged Mossad agent joins other cases of exposure of implanted spies within Hezbollah.
In 2011, Nasrallah acknowledged that his organization has outed three senior member caught skying for the CIA. One of the alleged spies was responsible for the training and was a senior engineer.
According to Al-Arabiya, since 2009, Lebanese security forces have arrested over 100 people suspected of spying for Israel, mostly within the telecommunication field.
