Israel’s Ambassador to the UN has called on the Security Council “to unequivocally and publicly condemn Hezbollah” following the attack this morning by Hezbollah terrorists on Israeli forces near the Lebanese border in which two Israeli soldiers were killed.

In a letter to UN Security Council President Cristián Barros Melet, Ambassador Ron Prosor said that “for years, Hezbollah has been stockpiling weapons in Southern Lebanon in violation of Security Council resolution 1701. Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah regularly threatens Israel and his terrorist organization took responsibility for this morning’s attack. Hezbollah has the military capabilities, it has made its intentions clear, and this morning we saw the results.”

Resolution 1701, passed in August 2006 after Hezbollah launched its last war against Israel, demands “the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon, so that…there will be no weapons or authority in Lebanon other than that of the Lebanese State.”

“The international community cannot ignore the threat any longer,” Prosor asserted. “Israel will not stand by as Hezbollah targets Israelis.  Israel will not accept any attacks on its territory and it will exercise its right to self-defense and take all necessary measures to protect its population.”

Prosor ended his letter by urging the Security Council “to unequivocally and publicly condemn Hezbollah.  The terrorist organization must be disarmed and the Government of Lebanon must abide by its international commitments and fully implement Security Council resolution 1701.”

The two Israeli soldiers killed in today’s incident were named as Staff Sergeant Dor Nini, 20, and Major Yochai Kalangel, 25. Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon warned that “Israel will show zero tolerance toward terrorist organizations, as we have done to this point, and will know to operate with full power and determination toward anyone who challenges it and tries to hurt its citizens. We will not let terrorist organization and rogue countries harm or try to harm the security of Israelis.”
