NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday attempted to uncover what kind of candidate Jewish billionaire and Republican mega-donor Sheldon Adelson is looking to put his money behind in the 2016 presidential race.
Appearing as a guest on the show, Jon Ralston, host of the television program Ralston Live, said Adelson wants a candidate “who’s going to win for a change,” and one that is not so focused on social issues.
He said Adelson was disappointed with Mitt Romney’s loss in the last general election and that his initial support for Newt Gingrich was mostly out of loyalty to a personal relationship that goes back 20 years.
Ralson also thinks the billionaire wants a Republican candidate who can both “talk reasonably” and win on the issue of immigration.
The casino mogul will not be handing out any money to candidates just yet, according to Ralson, who said Adelson will first wait for two or three of the presidential debates before he will decide which “candidate looks better to him.”
“I think he likes Marco Rubio, I think he likes Scott Walker, but he is not going to make a decision right now,” Ralston said. “I know there have been some reports that he is already going to load up on Rubio. That’s just not going to happen until he sees all these candidates perform.”
Ralson also talked about Adelson’s strong desire to prevent former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton from becoming the next president, saying, “I don’t think he’s going to have any limit on what he spends to beat Hillary Clinton.”
Adelson is worth an estimated $30 billion and in 2012 spent $100 million on Republican candidates seeking to defeat Barack Obama. In April, Adelson hosted the Republican Jewish Coalition conference at his Last Vegas hotel, The Venetian.
