Despite the heavy losses sustained by Hezbollah during its battles in Syria, the Lebanon based terror group has resolved to avoid tapping its cache of weapons designated for battle against Israel, Israeli news site NRG reported on Thursday.
A senior IDF officer told NRG, that Israel is “not seeing the transfer of weapons [to Syria] that are intended to strike Israel.”
“The fighters of the Lebanese organization are using Syrian artillery and have not transferred the weapons intended to strike Israeli territory,” he said.
Meanwhile, other security officials in Israel have noted that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah beleives that his organization is in great distress.
The anxiety has been demonstrated in his many public appearances in recent weeks, according to the officials.
Between 6,000 and 8,000 fighters – almost one-third of Hezbollah’s fighting force – are currently participating in the bloody Syrian civil war backing the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
To date, reports have indicated that about 7,000 fighters have been killed, with one hundred fatalities in recent weeks alone.
Among the dead are many high-ranking Hezbollah commanders who led battles against rebel groups al-Nusra Front and Islamic State. An Israeli officer told NRG that “the organization that has established itself as the defender of Lebanon [against Israel] is burying fighters because of the fighting in Syria.”
As a result, he said, Hezbollah has been making extra efforts to hide the funerals and keep secret the number of its deaths in Syria, “which confirms our assessment that they are in distress.”
